We have a JD 350 dozer that seems to be a frankinstein tractor. There is no serial number on it, but the decals say JD 350C. We need to do some work on it-- something in the right steering box is grinding, and adjustment doesn't fix it. So we ordered a shop manual for it, which we got, only to find out that the rear end parts are all looking different than the ones in the book. A call to the dealer (after several various calls trying to find out why this was) finally got us through to a knowledgeable parts specialist who was able to help me determine what many of the parts came from. Evidently the rear superstructure (seat, fuel tank, hydraulic reservoir, etc) came from a 350C (hence the decals). The rear end came from either a 350 first series, or a 350B. The parts guy said he couldn't tell which from the parts numbers I found to tell him. The engine, supposedly, came out of a 310 tractor! This machine has the outside manual angle blade, but someone has home-brewed it to have hydraulic tilt (but now the manual angle is not usable). However it has a massive JD counterweight around the drawbar, that the parts guy said was from a 350 loader model. So, this bionic contraption was very useful to us until it broke down, and now we have to fix it. We have two willing mechanics, but neither of them has any previous experience with crawlers. :(

Evidently we have to split the track to get at the steering rigging. That much I don't have much question about, pretty straight forward. However, we do need to get the proper shop manual for the rear end of this machine.

What I need to know is this. How can I tell the rear end of a 350 original model, from a 350B rear end? OR, are they the same? It seems that most of the parts are identical. But I need to know so I can order the manual. If a 350 original or 350B book will be equally useful, that helps me shop around better for the best price. If they are different, how do I know which we have, so I can get the right one?

Someone here might possibly know but I would strongly advise you also place your question on jdcrawlers.com.

350c ran oil steering clutch and brakes 350/350b were dry.

Yes, I managed to figure that much out. The machine says 350C but the clutch and brakes are dry. Now I am trying to figure out, for that rear end section, whether I'm dealing with 350, or 350B, and whether it matters, or if the rear end system was exactly the same for the 350 and 350B.

Thank you, I'll check it out, haven't managed to yet. I've had so much going on in my life right now, it's crazy. But we need to get this dozer fixed, so I better get right on it!

I might say also that the administrator of that site, Lavoy Wilccox, has all parts available for steering clutch overhaul at really good prices.
