Has anyone else have trouble with tandems leaking oil? Every Cat 140G and H series grader we had the tandems leaked oil. They used to last longer before around the 6000 hr mark before they leaked. Now our 2007 140H was just taken in to the dealer to fix both tandems under warranty. It has 2900 hrs on it. It must cost Cat a pile of money to do this work under warranty. This has been going on since the 1970 G series.
Anyone have leaking tandems on John Deere or Volvo graders?
Thanks
:)

Our JD770D started leaking at a wheel seal when it had about 200hrs on it. I called for warranty service and they came and fixed it. I know the mechanic very well and he said next time if you get a leak give it a couple days and if it continues then call. I took his advice. I've had a couple leaks since then but they go away in a few hours. I'm at 1100hrs now.

Off subject a little but we had a JD770BH a few years ago that had tandem pivot problems. I was taking the chains off in the spring and lifted the right side with the blade. Freaked me out!!! I thought the tandem was going to fall off!!! I'm guessing the entire tandem drive tilted out 3-5 degrees. Set it back down and it would tilt back in. Called service and they came and rebuilt the pivot mechanism. It was totally worn out. The machine had 350 hours on it. Never had another problem with that machine. Must have been assembled wrong.

I had to change a few on our old 14H's around 6000 hrs. The seal was still good on most of them but had lot of dirt packed in and pushed the seal lip. We started to scrape the dirt out (homemade plastic scraper) and monitor for leaks. Most have been OK.

I was told that Cat and Deere use the same supplier for the seals and that it was a supplier issue.

My tandem leaks sorted on Dresser A450E

I've had those problems in the early days, upgraded the seals to double lip & copied the later model seal (large thick Oring) outside. Stopped one side but the other still leaked.:(
Next time, removed tandem & trumpet, stripped & crack tested the trumpet, & guess what, a long crack in the seal/bearing area.
Welded it up & machined to spec, no more dramas in the last 7000 hrs :)

The seven models of the range

The seven models of the range are the Volvo G930, Volvo G940, Volvo G946, Volvo G960, Volvo G970, Volvo G976 and the Volvo G990 — 34,290, 35,179, 36,710, 36,768, 39,026, 40,554, 46,281 lb. (15,554, 15,957, 16,650, 16,678, 17,702, 18,395 and 20,993 kg), respectively. The first four models were engineered with the 7.2-L Volvo D7 engine. The larger three use the 9.4-L Volvo D9 engine. Volvo engines were identified as being ideal for these applications, as they produce high torque at low engine speeds, delivering responsiveness and fuel efficiency.
Through extensive operator input, Volvo has integrated into the design the requirements of motorgrader customers and users worldwide. The Volvo G900 motorgraders combine the technological strength of the Volvo Group with familiar Volvo CE attributes.

Never had any tandems leak on a Volvo (Champions), and if they do not a difficult job to fix. And running first Deere, 6000hrs and no leaks as of yet.

Had wheel seal leaks on a '96 740 Champion, a '92 Champion 720, and pivot leaks on the 720 too. they were early in the life of the machine (2000 hrs?) and we wound up with an update from champion, no more problem. The axle seals seem to be pretty common though. The Volvo we have now (2007?)hasn't developed any leaks yet.....
