Deere direct drive vs. torque converter

Please excuse ignorance, but on the G series john deere dozers, what is the difference between the direct drive and the torque controlled transmissions. What is the advantages and disadvantages between the two.

Tc puts a little more power to the ground. Some people say it likes more fuel, but I couldn't tell to much of a difference. And some seem to say you can fine grade in close quarters a little better to with a DD. I've run both and prefer a TC. Nothing wrong with a DD.
