back in March of 2024 I posted this picture, flying christmas trees for the ironworkers at the new Mary Bridge Children's hospital.

I am down here to see my wife at TG.
She was on the phone with me as safety person while I worked on the roof 100 miles away at the new house, and tripped and broke her acetabulum (hip socket.) I had her bestie come over who was only minutes away.
That was Sunday afternoon, and she is still waiting for surgery. It is about a 3 hour procedure to do an external fixation of the acetabulum, followed by 3 days inpatient care. The procedure is an order of magnitude more invasive and complicated than a hip replacement, which are typically day surgeries.
Life can turn on a dime.

That is heartbreaking to hear. Glad they could perform surgery and hope she makes a full recovery. I'm glad someone was nearby when I got debilitating back pain. I could barely move. It sure didn't help when I was mis-diagnosed 3 times. Sounds wrong but I was somewhat relieved to hear I had a form of cancer. At least I knew what was causing the pain. I was very grateful it's a treatable cancer. Wish I has more energy though.

Yikes! I knew a guy that broke both femurs at the same time and had rods in legs. He had copies of the x-rays. I went to see him in the hospital and 2 nurses were putting him a wheel chair. One of the nurses didn't lock the leg support and when she lifted his leg to put it on the support it dropped when she let go of his leg. He certainly wasn't amazed and let her know it. I could tell it must have hurt like hell! On top of that they gave him outdated blood. He recovered but sadly got pancreatic cancer several years later.

3 days inpatient tells the tale, must be pretty involved. They don't like to keep anyone overnight anymore.

Best wishes on her speedy recovery.
There's stories here of people waiting in the ER for hours and hours before getting looked at. Even dying because they didn't get treatment. Instead of cuts to Medicare it should be a priority. It's great it's free but instead of wasting money on useless crap give some money so we can get more Dr's.

My NCCCO crane certifications expire at the end of November. I can get the union to pay for renewal if I keep paying dues until I take the tests.
Now they require the long version of the tests, rather than a renewal set of questions.
There it is.
Renew the medical one more time, jump through the crane hoops just in case I get a call to do a fun gig?
Or just step back and focus on the new retirement gig? It is a little difficult to just let it fall on the floor.

It's a big deal for a guy that has busted his ass since puberty. When I saw that gig coming up for me, the drop in daily stress level made it an easy choice. The money gig will be less stress than the work gig.

Skyking, I would keep the certs up for at least a yr. As you have already experienced, things can change in an instant. My retirement was not as I expected (covid) and I wish that I kept the work options on the table but I closed that door a little too firmly when I left.
