Caterpillar Sproket Removal (also Komatsu)

tctractors

Senior Member
Just thought I would start a new thread on stuff I get up to, this will include sproket removal etc from D9G/H down through to D3, and Komatsus' from D30 to 155 as I dig out the pics. (May contain traces of nuts).

Scrub Puller

Yair . . . good stuff tct . . . you must be one of the few who almost specializes in keeping the old girls mobile.

I am told it is difficult and very expensive to get a fitter to do final drive work over here.

Cheers.

Scrub, I think the main issue is finding someone with the tools to do the job. Most Cat & Komatsu dealers consigned them to the scrap pile years ago. Present-day models don't need this kit to pull sprockets or open final drives up. Added to that I'd guess that a lot of fitters would fight shy of the job if either a) they didn't have the kit or b) hadn't done too many before, or both ........

Yair . . . Gotcha Nige. Thinking back, we were tooled up to do in-field repairs on just specific tractors. Most of the stuff evolved, pretty crude and based on modified fifty/eighty ton hydraulic jacks . . . you want more grunt use a longer handle.

Different thing again to have the range of gear and adapters to do all size machines.

Cheers.

Back 20 years or so I used to pull down around 3 or 4 F/Drives a month, that is go to site or yard and just pop the rim off for the C'os fitters to tackle the innards and give them a few tips on how to go about the bearing removal task etc, this was on mainly track shovels 941 to 977, the Komatsu kit was also very popular in my area so I used to also get stuck into them, the job of "dread" was the dead shaft in 155's the outside end thread would strip leading to some fearfull task to pull/cut out the knacker bit, in the end there was a repair developed to restore the end so it was a good result as getting the new shaft in was nearly as much trouble as getting the thing out, now I would be a lot more confident at doing 1 in short time but this work does not turn up anymore, I use my service press tooling near every week on something, its a good way to earn a pound as no one seems to want to do this type of work, it would seem the Laptop rules for them that dont want a bit of graft on the big bolts?? what I struggle with is finding a young skin wanting to learn the ropes with any interest, please dont think I only beat around old junk as I get plenty of work on new crap, but I tend not to take snap's of this iron.

Good to see tctractors 2.0, always enjoyed following the now vanished original posts & photo's. I grew up around the old iron, D8H's, D9G's, etc. The newer stuff might look prettier, but nothing beats the memories of firing up a D8H!

tc wish you were on my side of the pond. I'd love to learn a thing or 2 from you seeing these repairs first hand.
