By chance I had an old CAT man phone me today, I took the chance to ask him about the Direct Drive D8K's his answer was solid on the fact that the 76V series tractor U.S. built was the only tractors ever produced starting in he thinks around 1976, the D8K Power shift 66V and 77V production start date was early 1974 with the possible chance of some D8H tractors being sold in 1975, he did say that he had seen 2 Direct Drive tractors in the U.K. that went to Dutch or German Contractors to pull a Plough (plow) why they landed in the U.K. might be due to H. Leverton's contacts within the Farm Cultivation World.

The Direct Drive High Drive D6 tractors are about although I have not seen 1 myself, I am sorta' sure Neil D was scratching about with 1 a few years ago in Ireland, plus as you recall there has been a few snaps posted with the Oddball mounts as a feature, I sometimes work on a Komatsu tractor that is to all intents like a D65E -7 or 8, I think it is a D66E? that has Direct Drive, it is a very light tractor to handle even after a good long shift.

This is one of 5 D6 tractors working here. They are helped out by a Kommie D65 and a Cat D8.
It's a series 2 D6H in fine order.
However,Finnings were at them all on Friday doing some odd jobs on them.
This one was leaking exhaust gasses and the manifold studs were rotten
.
They removed the head as studs neaded drilling out. They told me that the drill can't align up on the back pot.It belongs to Ovenden Plant.
Tony,I would have been choking on me beer if I had to pull all that to bits over a leaky gasket

I KNEW IT!!! there are service truck over on that side of the creek that have a crane on them TC.... LOL

FSERVICE, that little Truck with a dinky crane on is a main dealer chariot, the crane would be used on little stuff that most people with a brain would manage in a simple way, that Truck is still junk against the mighty mounts we see being used over Seas, it's an odd lot really as we can transport 2 D9's on the same trailer load to a site now (within axle load spec') without any drama, but use a fancy Service Truck seems off the scale ?? Fitters run around in Ford Transits or Merc Sprinters over loaded all the time with the Police pulling them in and handing out tickets constantly, I refuse to get into the Van trap and stick to my L/Rover with a dinky little box of spanners in, the Police never stop me or roadside check me with VOSA Ministry inspectors. tctractors

TC this is what I found in regards to the PM I sent you on the D8H blade that wouldn't lift. I can only assume the bolts came loose and finally got enough pressure behind the spools to break the bolt heads off? Any other thoughts before I put it back together? Thanks, TIO

Wouldn't it be nice if they had learned how to weld out broken studs. Would have saved a lot of time.

TIO, it looks like you copped an easy job on your D8, that tank is a nasty thing to remove due to a couple of bolts that are always gunked up and painful to get at, I have not seen this bolt snapping thing before so its a new trick on me, the bolts heads look like they have been in trouble for some time, I would just replace the 3 and let it fly.
The "Firm" has been flat out for months although I only worked on Sunday till 1pm as I had to do the Garden Strimming, its getting Cold fast here now with morning frost and loads of fog, so its soon to be the season that sorts the Wheat from the Chaff, the job of today is to rebuild an Extec Crusher, the swing jaw locked a bearing so I sent the Jaw off to N/Ireland to be re-worked, the owner wanted the toggle seats changed, boy was the back seat a pig to set free but in the end it gave up but the time involved was untrue, tomorrow its re-fit the swing jaw 12 bolts to 3'000 Nm and 2 nuts to 7'000 Nm is the spec' thats 3 blows and 7 blows from my 28lbs Hammer, I will put up some snaps soon, all I can say is its to much work for 1 man really on crusher strip out, every bolt has been a pig and I have undone every bolt on the nasty thing.

Think you can save that Cat piston? Looks like the guy may need to sell off a couple of those cars to pay your bill!

Like the bike for two with the little motor, don't think I'd take it on a run up the M1!

All right Tony, what's the scoop on the piston..? Can't honestly say I've ever seen one quite like that before ........

Just wild guessing, too much starting fluid causing failure of ring land leading to crown failure. What ever think it might have made some strange sounds near the end. Looks like a large chunk was bouncing around in there.
