CAT 257b track drive motor leaking oil

My track drive motor was working erratically. It wouldn't work, then it would for a little bit, then it would stop again. There is hydraulic fluid dripping from the motor. Could this be something simple like a seal?

It depends on exactly where the oil is dripping from. If it is a hydraulic line connection to the motor that is leaking then maybe it might be nothing more than a seal. Can you see where the oil is leaking from..?

However the chances are more likely that the seal is a symptom and not the root cause of the problem, especially when you mention the motor has been operating erratically. An internal leak within the motor resulting from wear or something that has broken would most likely result in an external leak from a seal.
