Is it even possible to put the front cover on without lining up the pin? I don't recall how I was able to determine where the oil pump cover hole was supposed to be but I don't recall it being an issue. I think I put the front cover on loosely, saw a little scratch mark on the oil pump cover, and rotated it until the front cover seated all the way on.

I just called Cat and was quoted $394 for the alignment tool. So far this is the cheapest one I've found. I also called a diesel shop (Perkins dealer) and am waiting on a call back from them.

Progressive Diesel Injection in New Castle, PA quoted me at $325. I don't think anyone charges less than that. I ordered it.

The only way it won’t line up is if the pump was pressed in out of alignment. I installed mine without the tool and just wanted to verify that it was correct.
I had marked the old pump before removing it and then transferred that mark to the new one.
