I bought a Cat 215 excavator 96L02738 built around 1980. It originally came with a 3304 engine but that was replaced with a 3204 DI 10X engine later. The later models (14Z, 61Z, 57Y, 95Z) had the 3204 engine. I need to buy a service/overhaul manual. I like to buy the later manual w/ the 3204 engine chapter but I don't know if the other major components were changed much in these models. Does anyone know of the changes between these series and if I can get the info I need from the later manual that will apply to my earlier 96L series? This is a interesting machine, it was built in Belgium, shipped to the US, sold to Argentina (where the engine was changed), and finally shipped to Alaska where I bought it. It's got 35 years of wear & tear but still has some life left in it.

Thanks

Hi Bdward,

Do you need the complete manual or can I help you with some information from S.I.S.? Torque settings, testing adjusting , disassembly , assembly etc.

Thanks, but right now I'm just trying to put together enough books so I can deal with any of the issues that will eventually happen. The engine has just had a new head gasket and injectors installed but it has a lot of hours on it. Is the 3204 a long life engine and what generally fails over time?

Thanks -Bill

As a follow up, I've got a mechanic who's going to "tune up" the engine. Do you have the timing settings, valve settings, pump settings, & any other we'd need to make sure the engine is running at it's peak? The engine runs ok with good oil pressure but when I operate the hydraulics on the excavator it works the engine real hard. It smokes and bogs down. The engine is either not developing power or the pumps on the excavator are stroking too much and pulling the engine down. Anyway, if you have specs on the 3204DI engine I'd appreciate it. Hopefully it's something that simple and not the pumps.

Thanks - Bill
