The hydraulic oil is not being cooled. Any ideas where to start?

Do you mean transmission temperature? The hydraulics on an E series only had a cooler installed if equipped with a backhoe. If your transmission temperature gauge is reading hot possibly a stuck thermostat. The transmission had a temperature gauge on the far right of the dash.

My first guess would be to be sure your hydraulic cooler is free from any build up of dirt, dust oil residue on the outside of the cooling fins, If you find those areas to be clean and clear of obstructions, you may have bypass problems within the system causing the oil to heat beyond the cooling systems ability to maintain a safe temperature. Not much help I realize but it's a start.

The model year is 1992. I don't know if it came with a backhoe now iit has a 6-waay blade and winch. It does have an oil cooler. Oil is flowing thru the cooler. Am going to check thermostat next.

But is air flowing through the fins of the cooler? I don't know where you are on the planet but air/oil coolers need a good flow of both if the temps are on the warmer side.

@Botieal You will find that the transmission oil cooler (#7) is seperate to the engine radiator.
Lack of air flow from the engine fan through the coolers, due to build up of dirt - especially if there is a fuel or oil leak nearby - is often the cause for overheating.

The 850E does use a thermostat located on top of the torque converter which can also cause problems - as already mentioned - but check the oil cooler fins for any restriction first.
