Re: 1980 Case 480C backhoe (less the hoe) power steering works 'somethings'. Starting with a cold engine, power steering almost never works, feels as if it's locked up tight and can not turn wheels in any direction. As the engine warms up sometimes I can use the loader to raise the wheels off the ground and turn steering wheel all the left and all the way right, again and again as if bleeding the system. Steering wheel will turn without any weight on the front wheels but feels like there's no hydraulic assistance. If that doesn't work, I'll start what ever task I'm involved with, lifting the frontend to turn and at the same time still attempting turning steering wheel to side to side. It may take awhile but usual the hydraulics will kick back in and work well. However, if I shut the engine down and restart it, warm or cold, I lose the hydraulics and have to start all over again. The two front steering cylinders were leaking, suddenly leak worsened so replaced both with new. First two times I tested the new cylinders it work fine but the third time lost the hydraulics, it went back as before. Actually it's worse trying to coax it to work again. Pump has gotten low on fluid but never too low or empty. I tested the hydraulic steering pump pressure upper and lower hose. My pressure gauge starts at 100 and goes to 3,000 psi. Upper hose at the pump (with system in working order);
- Engine running not turning steering got no psi reading. - Engine at idle turning steering wheel got 500 to 1000 psi. - Engine at higher rpm got up 1500 psi but never got a reading unless turning the steering wheel. - While system was not functioning (locked up, impossible to turn wheel) had no psi readings. Lower hose; system working or not had no reading, but please remember gauage starts at 100 psi. Don't know what condition filter or pressure relief valve looks like, I haven't opened it up yet. I suspect the pressure valve sticking but can't find enough information to continue without aimlessly buying unnecessary parts. (Sorry it's long, just wanted to get it all out there)
Could use your help!!
