I am working on a old 544A,after it sets for a few days it will not move in forward or reverse. If you let it warm for a few min. and hold throttle wide open it will build trans oil pressure slowly. After it builds pressure it is fine and works perfect, foward, reverse, etc. If anyone has info on problem please let me know.Thank's steve931:usa

tranny screen

Try cleaning the transmission strainer and/ or filter and fluid. sounds like either your pump is weak, or it is clogged and cant pickup a prime..

i agree, sounds like it cant pull a prime. other than the pump being weak it maybe a torque converter issue.

Sounds like a priming problem to me. Have you changed the oil yet? How does it look. For a machine that old you might need to thicken up the oil a little bit. I am running a 644A with has basically the same transmission just a little bigger, before I rebuilt my transmission a couple years back I had a similar issue. I ended up putting in a couple gallons of Lucas Oil additative in it. This stuff is really thick and it allowed me to get through the busy season till I could tear the transmission down. If I recall the oil pump is mounted behind the hydraulic pump right below the seat. So its preaty easy to get to without taking the trans out. I can't remember if there was a seal or something to keep the oil in the pump or not. See what the strainer tells you this weekend to know where to look for the problem. If its clean its likely a seal leaking or the pump is getting worn. If it has aluminum flakes on it then its the torque converter. There is also a pair of remote oil filters in front of the transmission. These could also be clogged up. Again check these as well for flakes. Let us know what you find. Hopefully its something simple and not that torque converter, these transmissions are not cheap to fix.

Thank you for your reply it was very useful. I think you are correct on the problem. I pulled both filters and they were dirty but I did not see hardly any filings are metal in them. I am going to pull the strainer and tube tomorrow and see what I have their.John Deere recommends J20C oil for diff. and trany. I think I will go a little thicker on oil replace filters and I will let you know how it goes. Again I appreciate your input very much,Thank's steve931:usa

Any update on this? Just wondering how you made out

Thank's for info. I changed tranny fluid and filters. I also had a leak on the suction tube, I think this was a lot of the problem, I repaired the leak and so far the machine has had no problems for over a week of running. I will let you know if I have any more tranny problems. Again I really appreciate the info. steve931:usa

Remember that when you have a slow to prime or no prime issue it is almost always caused by one of three things-an air leak in the suction side of the pump or a worn pump or a plugged suction screen. The plugged screen effect is obvious, the other two have the same effect's on a pump causing it to lose its "internal seal" A pump does not suck oil, the meshing of the gears, the seal of the pistons, the vane to rotor ring contact in the pump cause a partial vacuum on the inlet side of the pump and atmopheric pressure pushes oil to the pump. When the pump wears the "seal" created by the oil is broken and the partial vacuum is no longer present and oil will run back down the inlet hose/tube to the transmission/resevoir. This causes the cavitation/lack of immediate pressure. It sounds like you found the issue with the leaking suction tube. I am sure that there are other reasons this happens but these are usually the first things to look for. As stated in previous posts change oil and filters first before anything.

I'm having a similar problem.

Can anyone tell me if the strainer can be pulled from a 544B with the transmission in place? (Looks really close to the frame - just wanted to verify before I tried to yank the strainer.)

Thanks,
