Hey everyone,

Trying to help a buddy out with a 2001 DT466E and not having any luck. I am by no means a heavy duty engine mechanic but I know enough to be dangerous.

So it was ran dry out of fuel, then he put 5 gal from a can it and sat and cranked it till it fired. Ran it the next day just fine. The following day it wouldn't start.

I noticed the fuel filters were very old and the water separator had quite a bit of water in it.

Replaced both filters and prefilled them and could not get it to hand prime with the stick primer. Was leaking fuel from the primer so I figured it was shot and replaced it. When I swapped filters I also cleaned the rock catcher and noticed the check ball was pretty beat up so that was replaced as well.

Still doesn't seem to want to prime. It will act like it wants to fire but always has air at the schraider valve.

I then noticed the water separator was bone dry. Refilled it. Tried priming again. And same thing. Will act like it's going to fire but won't.

I'm thinking it's something between the tank and water separator but I am unsure. Not sure where to go next.

My '99 was doing the same thing. You may have already done this but I replaced the oring on the first separator right before the line goes into the primer. I guess its the same thing as you are calling the rock catcher. Anyway, replaced the oring and tightened it up pretty snug and the engine started.
