does any one know the way to tell what valves are intake and exhaust?

With the valve cover off. Lightly tap the top of the rocker arm or valve stem with a small hammer and you can here the echo in the exhaust or intake.

When you're finished, be sure and throw any and all tools you used over your right shoulder. Or better yet, leave them on the machine or drop them in the bellypan. That way the sale bill will read "Fiat-Allis 14C bulldozer, recent overhaul, non-running, with misc. tools scattered throughout". Might add a little value to the final bid on the auction!
