Case 580 SM Front Axle Questions

Thanks for the replies! I have the parts ordered from the Case dealer. Luckily, the snap ring and thrust washers seem to come in sets of two so I can use them when I get the other side done. Everything on the front axle has been pretty bad so I've been rebuilding it. Tie rods, ball joints, king...

Case 580 SM Front Axle Questions

I think that's how they were. They were flopping around in the planetary when I opened it. I didn't see any other damage in there. I attached the page from the service manual where it says to glue the thrust washer. The only thing I could think to glue is the thrust "plate" maybe?

Case 580 SM Front Axle Questions

I'm in the process of changing out the king pins on the left side with the bushings, seals ect. due to lots of play in the front wheels and a leak between the planetary and axle. I pulled the planetary and the axle out together and laid it out on the bench and noticed the axle was able to...

    Service Manual for 590 SM

I would check ebay but it could be hard to find a series 1. At least it was for me. And the engine manual doesn't come with the series 1 service manual. If you really want to you can go to the Case website and it will bring you to this page https://www.dmcretail.com/productSearch.aspx It says...

    Hello from Canada

The lumber prices have definitely slowed down my build... I had drawn up some plans last fall and got some material quotes. I just called the same lumberyard to update my pricelist and was floored! I have a heavily treed property so I may be a lumberjack this year... My uncle has a portable mill...

    590 SM Low high idle

What are you guys using for a tach that would be accurate? I have a '04 580SM and on the tach in the cab, my RPM is on the low side according to what the service manual says. 650 idle and 2100ish full - no load is what I read and for the stall tests I'm supposed to have 900 - 1100 and 2350 -...

    Case 580 SM fluid change

Thanks Bote! I had lifted the firewall seal and didn't see it the first time due to lack of light and it being black. It's not as accessible as I would have thought... Could be why it was never changed. Since I've been changing fluids, I've been noticing lots of little leaks everywhere. I think...

    Case 580 SM fluid change

Thanks Delmar I will work it for 12 - 16 hrs a day in June as I excavate and build my shop, then it will be used occasionally for property maintenance year round. I might go with 68 now and 46 before winter? Manual calls for Hy-tran but the local Case dealer also has hydraulic fluid. I did buy a...

    Case 580 SM fluid change

I do have the manual gearshift on the right and no twist shifter or LED panel. I'll definitely pick up some additive and hy-tran tomorrow and do the axles, planetarys and transmission. I might hold off on the hydraulic flush for now, I noticed some heavy wear on a few hoses so I'm going to take...

    Case 580 SM fluid change

I did notice a couple drips of red fluid when I crawled under the machine... Nothing in the snow but it was there. Could be why the guy was selling it. It was pretty dirty under there so maybe I'll give it a bit of a clean and see where it's coming from. Hopefully just a bit of a sloppy pour. My...

    Hello from Canada

I'm in Ontario, North of Toronto. Two days ago it was -30C (-22F) and tomorrow it's supposed to be 7C (45F)! I may go out in my bathing suit tomorrow and crawl under my backhoe lol

    Case 580 SM fluid change

Great tip I think I may do that Tinkerer! @alrman, I don't think I have a powershift transmission unless the previous owner removed the gear selection lever for some reason... Haven't really crawled around under the machine too much yet to confirm either way. It has been warming up and the 8...

    Case 580 SM fluid change

Thanks for the quick reply Tinkerer! I do have that post bookmarked for when I do the flush. The only thing that is making me nervous about flushing with $2500+ worth of OEM oil is that I might miss a potential leak or not completely get all the water out and have to dump another $2500 into it...

    Case 580 SM fluid change

Hello everyone! I'm really new to this so please forgive me if this has been discussed before. I'm hoping to completely change out all the fluids and filters on my new to me machine. The hydraulic oil is milky, the axles fluids are black and there's redish in transmission. I've been scouring the...

    Hello from Canada

Hello everyone! I've been reading posts on this forum for a couple of weeks and I've found extremely helpful information! I've recently just bought a 2004 Case 580 SM to help me on my new 25 acre property. I've rented small backhoes and mini-exs a couple times before so I'm really new at all...
