    Cummins NTC855 Service Manuals/ Literature

Thanks for your help gents. Didn’t even consider that there’d be copies easily available on the net honestly- feel a bit silly now. These things seem to be rare as hens teeth out here. Appreciate it.

    Cummins NTC855 Service Manuals/ Literature

Hi all, Just wondering if anyone has a copy of the service/ repair manual for the big cam IV engines (NTC855) they could send me a copy of? Got one I’m working on at the moment and nobody seems to really know much about the older gear anymore. Sadly it’s too old for Quickserve too. Thanks in...

Why does Caterpillar use high tracks?

Heya folks, I've been curious about this for quite a few years now so I've spoken to many people about as well as having read up on the issue. Incidentally we are doing transmissions systems at TAFE and so I have access to quite some literature regarding this exact topic. Here's my 2c. The...

    Excavator "buddy" system

It's certainly not the best way to do it but I suppose for a small hole and if that's what they had on site or just what they had full stop, then... Not bad. Good luck to people who think outside the box.

D6R XW serial number low production run

Hello Bullcat, I'm quite sure that most of the people on here are more knowledgeable than I, but I have encountered one of these machines before. The "XW" arrangement means that they track frames are pushed out wider to accept wider shoes, but not quite so wide as an LGP dozer. It's a sort of...

Ratchet Breaker Bars and Snap On tools

G'day again ladies and gents, Wow! Thankyou so much for all your advice! I will do my best to take it on board. I am acutely aware of the fact that good tools are an investment. Also that quality tools are the way to go. Although I am only a first year apprentice I have been working with...

Ratchet Breaker Bars and Snap On tools

G'day ladies and gents, I'll be honest- I need to eat my words a bit here. I'm an apprentice diesel fitter and although I have a lot of the tools I need I've been stocking up on new bits for the stuff I don't already have. I have avoided Snap On so far for two reasons. The first is the crazy...

    electrocution

Another good one to watch would be the electrical (not necessarily HV but still dangerous) wiring in the roof of workshops. I would have jumped if the need arose until I read this thread... possibly should be made a sticky for novices like me?

Very Rough engine idle Deere 490D

Are you using implements at idle and it's shaking or is it just shaking on idle? Also, if you can find out what rpm the problem occurs at it might be helpful. Especially if it's simply idling too low, though I doubt that's what it is from what you've described.

    Tool box safety talk

Maybe you could start by saying all those things. Then maybe follow up with some of the things mentioned in this thread. :my2c Look blokes I'm just under 20. I work with people younger than me, the same age and everything above. It's not a case of "the <40s don't give a rat's" or the "older...

    Shop Made Dozer Masts

Hello NCSLIM1, On your blade where those 4 holes are on those flat pieces, make up a plate buttressed (not sure if that's the word I'll get a pic asap) to a pole and mount it like that. That's what I've seen.

    Small lapses in concentration

Sorry for the super duper late reply kb9tci. It's been a hectic few months. Thankyou for the kind words. It's drilled into us from a young age "oh you're just imagining it" which is fine I guess in most situations where it causes no detriment. However, working with heavy equipment and the...

    Pipe Plug Sockets

Yep, that ignorant "young chap" shall we say is the exact reason I'm asking this question. Just about everything I see has been overtightened or is otherwise far too tight. Thanks for the replies guys, I've looked for Mac briefly but couldn't find much (in, or willing to ship too Australia)...

    Pipe Plug Sockets

Hello caterpillarmech, That's what I am using currently, however I have been led to believe that using breaker bars/ ratchets in this manner (with the ball half out of the hole, due to the fact that it is a "pipe plug") results in costly broken tools. I probably should have made that clear in...

    Pipe Plug Sockets

G'day all, I'm currently servicing a lot of equipment and I know that the Caterpillar machines use "Pipe Plug" sockets. Just wondering if anyone other than Snap On make them of decent quality? What do you guys use? Cheers

    Cat 740

740s engage gears with a bump that's just par for the course with those really. I wondered when I first came across them too. As Cmark says, keep the oils and maintenance up to them and be sensible and they'll love you back ;)
