Cat No. 12 won't go into gear

Do you mean that the clutch does not release and consequently you have gears grinding when you try to put in gear or does gear shifter not want to move?

Caterpillar 12 grader engine is dead - please help?

At risk of sounding harsh; In my opinion, your Option #3 is neither economical nor functionally possible. Take it from folks who have been around and worked on these vintage machines for decades... Repowering with a different engine than a D318 is going "down a rabbit hole"!

    1957 cat 12

Auto-Lec Rebuilders, Sherman TX, sells a 24 volt generator to alternator conversion. auto-lec.com Alternatively (excuse he pun!), I would look for a replacement regulator from one of the Cat used parts dealers... particularly because you have already repaired the generaor!

    1957 cat 12

You haven't identified which series No. 12 grader you have. I don't have access to a series 8T parts book but the series 80C parts book for the generator group. The parts book has detailed pages devoted to the regulator and generator. An appropriate parts book for your grader will be helpful...

    1957 cat 12

Is your No. 12 a 24 volt direct start grader or a 6 volt electric start "pony" engine grader?

Caterpillar 12 grader engine is dead - please help?

As ususal; OzDozer is giving you some great advice. I echo his recommendation about getting Serviceman's Reference Book for both the grader and the D318 engine, the Parts book, and the Operators and Mainenance book. These books are invaluable in helping you get "acquainted" with the grader. I...

    #12 motor grader

To adjust the clutch; First I adjusted the clutch pedal so there is about 0.010" clearance between the clutch fork and the throw-out bearing assembly. Secondly, I adjusted the three pressure plate levers to 0.125" clearance. I am going to remove the rectangular clutch inspection cover and...

    #12 motor grader

I can't express in words how disappointed I am today. Engine is back in the grader but I still can't put the grader into gear while the engine is running. I was sure that it was the stuck friction discs but it's behaving the same as before the clutch rebuild. I replaced the friction discs...

The photographs show the drive plates before cleaning and after cleaning along with the old and new friction discs.

    #12 motor grader

I should have proof read my previous post; "I have NOT confirmed my understanding" about the clutch similarities. One more thing; I had to pry the friction discs from the drive plate and pressure plate. It was like the discs were stuck to the plates with double-sided tape.

    #12 motor grader

The following are the Cat part numbers for the clutch components that I am replacing. It is my understanding that the oil clutches in the 8T, 80C, 70D/71D, and 99E graders are the same, but I have confirmed my understanding. I do know that the oil clutch parts for the 80C are the same as the...

    #12 motor grader

I purchased all new parts from my local Cat dealer; the gasket between the flywheel and transmission housings, throw-out bearing, what I call the pilot bearing and race, and the friction discs. I want to inspect the transmission brake, but first I have to remove the clutch actuating shaft. The...

    #12 motor grader

Coincidentally, I just pulled my No. 12 (80C) engine because the clutch would not disengage. Both of my friction plates were fused to the drive plate, flywheel, and pressure plate. I don't regret the clutch removal over the "drag it until it frees" option... I think that it's a better long term...

Case 580B Torque Converter Control Valve

The torque converter control valve on my Case 580B does not reduce the torque converter pressure sufficiently to shift gears without grinding. Once in gear, the tractor moves forward and reverse beautifully with about 140 lbs. hydraulic pressure. I have adjusted the cam control to the extent...

    580b transmission

Alan's post is a good description of two transmission types. In other words, your top photograph appears to be the "Mechanical Shuttle" transmission with a typical clutch. The lower photograph appears to be a "Power Shuttle" transmission that does not have a typical clutch. Another tell-tale...
