What's The Craziest Mechanical Problem You've Experienced?

I had a 69 F250 Camper Special, 300-6 with a C4 auto. It had a 40year old engine in it, so I pulled it and did bearings, seals, gaskets and rings. It had a pretty smooth bore, so I just honed it and figured I'd put in my spare engine when I got around to it. Get it all back together, and it...

    Gradall 534D slow in 2wd

As an update- Something popped free in the drive system yesterday and now it does full speed  Don't know, don't care anymore. This thing is a poorly maintained overpriced pile. The guy wants $19,500 for it, the local rental company has one for $14,900 that's in much better shape...

Clearing beneath a tramline, Jasper, CA

Are these the ones that had the cab mounted on a pivot ball? When I was working at Atlas Castings in Tacoma, they had a picture on the wall of one on a rack that was about 70º, with the machine sitting 45º to the rack. Kinda wild, not sure I'd want to be in that cab.

Ford in Fords not IH 2011

Is the tensioner broken or does it need a new bearing? 99% of the time you can press a new bearing in and be on your way. Otherwise, if you have a Parts Plus or Napa close by, see if you can compare some of their tensioners off the shelf to yours, they should also have a catalog as well.

    Husqvarna chainsaw question

Lol, been a lot of places since then. I'm living the furthest east I have in the last six years now though.

The early 24v Cummins were some of the first diesel pullers to be exploited. Before that, it was mostly supercharged gas V8s and gas V8-based engines.

    Husqvarna chainsaw question

Thanks, that's what I figured. I'll get one of those coming, he seems to have the best price for the line and filter. Whereabouts in Maine are you located?

    Gradall 534D slow in 2wd

Well, I fixed it some. The foot switch is stuck closed, so I unplugged it. It now does about 10-12mph. The inch function works now as well. It has a lot of room for improvement, but now it doesn't take me half an hour to cross town.

What kills diesels is the smoker crowd. The greenies see these guys out there with twin 6" stacks on a late 90s Ram, belching tons of smoke, then suddenly all diesels are these noisy dirty things. While NOx is a problem with diesels, it's just as much of a problem with the pet hydrogen...

    Husqvarna chainsaw question

I picked up a Husky Rancher 44 a few weeks back and haven't been able to find the correct parts for it, namely the right fuel line. I went to the local Husky dealer, and they took me for $7 for a coiled piece of rubber hose. Is there supposed to be a grommet that the hose passes through, or a...

    Gradall 534D slow in 2wd

Thanks for posting that, I hadn't been able to find a manual so a my diagnostics were limited. I had questioned the inching valve a little since the brake pedal cut the drive as soon as it was pressed, and then the service brakes engaged at about half travel. This isn't right by the manual, so...

    Gradall 534D slow in 2wd

This unit is NA, so no turbo issues. It seems to rev out, but it's hard to tell with a hydraulic system. At WOT max speed, there is constant light black smoke, while if I back off just a bit it goes away. It sounds to be running at 2400-2600rpm. I'll have to check the foot switch a bit when I...

Ford in Fords not IH 2011

If you maintain the engines properly and don't beat them like a rented mule, they last quite well. If you have an employee who uses the governor as a shift point or speed limiter, I don't care who made the engine, it'll have problems. As far as the C6, I guess it was -the- transmission to swap...

Ford in Fords not IH 2011

If you think about it, any time you get more power out of the same displacement, you loose life/reliability. Consider a Cummins NT series engine, 235hp out of 855CID. Now the 6BT, same horsepower out of 360CID. Which do you think will last longer, have a lower failure rate, etc? I for one...

Ford in Fords not IH 2011

Not going to be any worse than the current engine, at least you won't have to pull the cab to get to it. The diesels in Ford trucks have been complex since 94, the going rumor is that "powerstroke" is a modified version of a Native American word that means "too many parts". I just resealed the...

I pushed down and pulled up on that a few times, but didn't notice any changes. Shouldn't I hear a valve click with that pedal?

    Gradall 534D slow in 2wd

I have been working with a 534D9 the last few weeks, and I can honestly say I am quite frustrated by it. The road speed is unbearably slow. I build and install handrails, and have to run all over town. It's all close enough, and I cannot afford to have this thing hauled every time I change...

    tri axle trailer question

Wow, I have a heavier duty tongue setup on my 10k car hauler. If you're on a budget, build your own trailer. Use mobile home axles and tires, the axles are rated at 6k, there are used tires available around $45 each on rims with a 14ply/3300lb rating, 12" electric brakes are standard as well...

Any pictures of what would pull this trailer?

There was a similar trailer used in PSNS to move large sections, reactor and engine room sections for subs within the shipyard. IIRC, they used a yard tug to move it, but it sounded like it was spinning pretty fast for the road speed it was going.
