looking for some insight in building a sprocket puller/press for removal and install on my old 17a. i understand i need to over build everything to withstand 50-100tons ish. my question is, what does the press part of sprocket install pull on? is the press tool threaded onto the final drive shaft? or am i totaly out to lunch?!

you go thought big holes on sprocket and set on end of shaft, but you can also put jack on back side of sprocket and to frame of tractor and hit other side with bfh. that works sometimes, i have built one out of a steering clutch flindge for head bar stock for rods, and best laid plans, will still lose sunday school lession some time. just dont jack again cover.

thats fine and good but what about pressing them on. im told if not pressed on they can work loose. fact or fiction? to pull off you need to be over top the dead axle pushing against the final drive shaft otherwise your pulling the bullgear against the cover no?

I think the last one I saw apart was around 1982 so maybe someone with direct experience will drop in and set it straight. As I recall, yes you need an adapter piece that screws onto the hub shaft to push against the sprocket to set it. I kind of remember it being the same piece used to hook up the fingers to pull the sprocket with, but then again that might be the dementia talking. I have seen people use an adapter on the dead axle to push against, but have heard from some knowledgeable people that big problems can be had doing it that way.

you have a lot bigger nut and theades on hub a little time and hits on spocket will press on,lot better than breaking end of dead axel with press, has always worked for me. just takes time to tighten nut and hit.

ok yes both are good answers. i have zero intention of using the dead axle to mount the press. ill take the large nut off my parts machine and use it for the basis of my press tool then. its kind of what i thought happens pressing them on and off but happy for the responses. dozr how well did they last with the turn and tap method? how well did the inner bearing withstand the tapping also?

If I remember correctly, there is a measurement required for the distance on the hub that the sprocket needs to be pushed to. I don't know of anyone who was able to get there on a good hub using the nut and hammer method. It might not matter on a casual use machine but I wouldn't feel comfortable that the procedure would provide a long lasting assembly.

always worked on 94 ---- d5 stright shift had no prolbem lasted till gears wore out . also used on 10k d 6 c been long time ,aways tell my age when talking about old eq.
