Serial number is always best to start a question with

Most likely you will need to remove the track adjuster spring then rebuild the cylinder. Hardest and most dangerest part is compressing the spring and banding so it can be removed. Either get someone with the equipment to do it, or cut the spring with ox-axe and replace with new

I don’t think you need to touch the spring on a D4D. Break the track, remove the idler from the fork and pull it from the cylinder. Seals will likely be in a plate that bolts into the cylinder within the recoil spring. The spring is to absorb shock and trash in the tracks and keep it from breaking a chain.

A S/N and I can tell you exactly what the procedure is and even give you part numbers. Not a bad job on most machines. Breaking the track is the worst part.

Remove the track is the first thing. I haven't done one on a D4 but I'm guessing you have to remove the top roller stand and pull the front idler far enough away to remove the cylinder whole. The adjusting piston will be inside and it likely has a threaded hole that you can attach a piece of ready rod to for pulling it out. A photo of the track frame would help.

And I've done D4D tracks by hand with a 12 pound sledge and some elbow grease ;) so it's not real hard...

Check your tracks for a master link you might not have to beat a pin out.
Inspect the recoil spring for broken coils.
After you get tracks open slide idler a head.
When you have idler in the place where its been running measure the distance between the adjuster flange and the spring flange,if this is over 5 inches you will have to do something about your tracks.
To remove yoke 4 bolts on idler 4 bolts on adjuster flange.

Pull flanged cylinder out of spring,piston with seals will be inside. piston will have 2 flat split rings and a seal and snap ring on end .There is a o-ring on the flange that needs to be replaced.​

you can if it is just the seal and enought slack in track use a hyd jack push idler forward bolts out of cyl get lock off piston get seal out put new seal on with out taking track apart ,done it lots of times.
