That news is absolutely crushing to hear. I’m kinda surprised it doesn’t have a low oil pressure shut down, or is that just wishful thinking on my part and not really a thing? Again, sorry you have to go through this, after following your posts though I have no doubt that you’ll get it sorted, hopefully for less than some of the numbers you posted.....

Rereading all the info from liebherr, the engine they are offering me, isn't new, its a rebuild also. They didn't mention a core charge, but I'm sure there is one for it.

The engine from them, is not in the states, and they haven't given me the availability.

Thanks also for the sympathy guys, its not a nice Christmas present, but its part of the deal, big equipment can have big repair costs. At least we have the capability to pull the motor and reinstall a new one. I'd hate to have to call a liebherr tech for all of that.

I've got a pretty full week of crane work this week, but I'm hoping to get the pan off at least and see what the damage is.

That sucks man! Wish I could give you helpful advice but I’m no help and this no time for smart a$$ remarks. I’ll save them for another time. Good luck and best wishes, if you think a good carpenter would help I’m there.

fwiw. that sure looks like a mercedes eng. to me

Yes, they have the same single cylinder per head, injector pump arrangement, but they are slightly different. The liebherr engines are actually made in switzerland by bulle. Of course bulle is a wholly owned subsidiary of Liebherr. I wouldn't be shocked if there is some cross engineering done between liebherr and mercedes, but from everyone I've talked to, it looks like a mercedes, but it isn't a mercedes.

Thanks tradesman, if I run across some trim work inside the motor, I'll give you a buzz.

I'm going to try to do a little more research this week, and come up with a game plan, one day at a time.

It would help if I had more cranes that size, like I do with my smaller cranes, because I had work scheduled for it between now and the end of the year. Some of the jobs will probably wait, the other ones I'll try to steer to someone who can help them.

Well I don’t know what your waiting on. I’d buy two more that size, money’s cheap. They print more everyday.

It’s nice that you have that much work for it. Better to replace an engine in a busy crane then just have it sit in the yard.

A friend of a friend had to get a new Liebherr engine. There was an additional charge for a rather useless Liebherr mechanic to accompany the engine. Liebherr mechanic was not optional.

Before you decide on rebuilding, you better check on part availability. If you have work for the crane, I'll wager the least costly route is the rebuilt engine from Liebherr.

Might just need the crank ground ,new bearings and a turbo. How long was it run without oil pressure? I'm sure your old mechanic could rebuilt it with a good book. I think diesels are easier and more straightforward to work on.

No pictures of the inside. It went to a engine man today. I didn't even pull the pan off. I decided that whoever pulls it apart is going to be the guy that puts it back together. Big question is going to be parts availability and time frame, with the holidays. He's hoping to get it apart starting monday, so we can get parts ordered.

I had considered the repowering with something domestic petepilot, but its just too complicated of a setup. I think by the time I made all that stuff work, I would be better off to fix what I have.

I have pictures somewhere of a krupp 4070 all terrain, that had been mercedes from the factory, that had a 6v92 in it. It looked like the most cobbled together mess. Almost like something I would do.

Local rental house got a new trailer. Said they didn't ask for it, corporate just sent it. Driver is not pleased. Its a 53' tri axle, which in missouri doesn't help you at all without buying permits. And they never buy permits. I was kind of laughing about it with the manager (about what a pain that trailer will be and how unhandy), and she said "come with me". Regional manager was in a back office, she said "tell him what you just told me".

Driver had been already complaining about it, and she wanted the regional guy to hear it from someone without any vested interest. My rollback is a landoll style, with set in axles and 43', because otherwise you'll never get around with it. He's thinking of sending the 53' to a different store that doesn't have our terrain issues, or a state where they can have a annual for overweight and not buy daily permits.
Oh, and its a heavy trailer too, my scale said around 23,000 lbs. 20191210_080940.jpg 20191210_081641.jpg
