Have found some great info on this forum already including parts breakdown of final drive but alittle nervous of getting this 'simple' job wrong! ( I suspect brake seals ) . I have disconnected the 3 oil pipes and have read on a previous thread that motor held in by two long bolts. Its not obvious which these are. Do they have Allen heads ? as there are six of these showing same side as oil pipes. Don,t want guts of motor all over field !

There are 6 allen head bolts holding the motor on to the final drive. You need to remove these in order to remove the motor, then you can replace the brake piston seals. But if you have oil leaking by the sprocket there is a good chance that your duo-cone seal is gone also. If the brake seals are bad you can end up pressurizing the planetary housing and causing the duo-cone seal to leak. A good way to check this is to check and see if your planetary has hyd. oil in it and is over full.

Hi Dusty, yes its the 6 allen head bolts that need removing, then there is a bevel washer type spring and then the piston! the piston may be tight to get out i have had to blow into the oil port with an airline to get them out before! Also there is an o-ring between the motor and the port, best to replace this also when in there!

As for the seals, i have them on the shelf if you need them, there not that expensive!

Over all not to bad a job to do

Thanks to you both--also thanks to the power of the internet ! Will report on progress next week and may well need seals cps . Other track motor did same 2 years ago and I was too busy farming to fix it. Local excavator business did repair and said seals unobtainable and had to be specially made ( couldn't find you Aiden !!!!!) ----cost not too bad but thought I should have a go myself this time as farm looks like disaster zone due to too much wet weather!

I am doing this also..to do the brake seals do u just have to take off the motor and they are in there? and also the main lip seal part no.ap3055f is that in there too or do you have to take off the cover the other side?

I thought it was the brake seals . Done them twice! It was just the small oring which was the issue.
Hopefully yours might be the same

Two and a half years later got back to this job on my Hitachi EX60 -1 . Going well so far. Once 6 allen headed bolts undone ( very tight ) motor fell off. Split open motor to find small bearing knackered thus presumably main oilseal ( is that duo cone previously mentioned ? ) is source of the leak. Should I still take out brake piston and replace those o rings as surely they hold gear oil in planetary drive or am I being stupid which is of course very possible!

If you are this far then resealing the brake piston would normally be in order.

Brake piston seals work with hydraulic oil, and are most often the source of oil leaks in excavator drives. Change them. Duo-cone or some such mechanical face seal lives on the gear side of the drive, it keeps the gear oil in the main rotating sprocket hub, or at least it's supposed to.
