I'd make it long enough so that I could see the gauge while operating the machine in the cab.

While checking pump pressures, also keep an eye on that charge pressure, to see if it exhibits the same drop when the pump comes on stroke. If the pump pressures are decent and the charge pressure stays up reasonably well, then the problem is probably elsewhere, perhaps a failed flushing valve. Cheers

What do you consider decent on the charge pressure when a load is put on?

The charge pressure should hold around 245 to 255 PSI. As lantraxco stated, you might see a slight drop when flushing valves open, but that should be only momentarily at best.
