Cat 924g problems

Ok guys i have two cat 924g loaders militarized, with the warning light blinking at all times, and i do not have the scan to nor will ever have the scan tool avalible to me, is there any other way to pull the codes from these loaders? Thanks

Diagnostic codes can be displayed on the instrument panel. The codes can be viewed when the panel is in the service mode. To enter the service mode, begin with the key switch in the OFF position. Cycle the key switch three times within ten seconds. Then, leave the key in the ON position. The displays are used to show active diagnostic codes and logged diagnostic codes. The MID is shown on the left display. The CID and the FMI are shown on the right display. When a diagnostic code is active, the letter "A" is shown in the left display. When a diagnostic code is inactive, only the code is shown. Each code is shown for several seconds. Then, the display will show the next code. After all the codes are shown, "---" will appear. The display will then cycle through all the codes again. To exit the service mode, turn the key to the OFF position for five seconds.


Post up the codes and i can help you with them.

The ones I've worked on have a rocker switch with a check mark on it. Push the rocker and each time it will cycle to a different function. As I recall there will be mileage, and then fault codes. The codes come real fast so I usually have pencil and paper to write them down. I usually cycle through at least two times and usually four times to get all the codes written down. As I recall the display will say end when you get to the last code and then start all over again.

awesome thanks a bunch guys, i had a feeling that the scanner wasnt the only way to get the codes, ill do that in the morning and post up my findings tomorrow night, theres probably gonna be a bunch these loaders arent in the best shape to say the least:rolleyes:

alright the key trick worked on both loaders and heres the laundry list for them, the first loader displayed this one on the left display with these to follow on the right display

081 is the machine identifier and 036 is the engine identifier.

The A means it is an active code, it is currently faulty. the others are not and are stored. The others could become active as soon as the machine is started or when moved.
With Cat ET the code will show when they are occurred and how many times but since you don't have access to that i would not worry about then unless there is an operational problem related to the code.

MID 081 - CID 0096 - FMI 03

Conditions Which Generate This Code:

This diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM reads the signal voltage of the fuel level sender and the voltage is too high. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed here:


The sender has failed.

The return circuit of the sender is open in the machine harness.

The signal circuit in the machine harness is shorted to a source of positive voltage.

The signal circuit in the machine harness is open or the sender is disconnected.

The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.

Test Step 1. CHECK THE CONTROL AND THE HARNESS.


Turn the disconnect switch and the key start switch to the ON position.

Disconnect the machine harness connector from the fuel level sender.

At the machine harness connector for the sender, measure the voltage (DCV) between the signal contact 1 (wire 447-PK) and the return contact 2 (wire 202-BK).
Expected Result:

The voltage is between 4.5 and 8.0 DCV.

Results:


OK - The voltage is between 4.5 and 8.0 DCV. The ECM and the harness are correct.
Repair: Replace the sender.

Stop.


NOT OK - The voltage is not between 4.5 and 8.0 DCV. The ECM may have failed or the harness has failed. Proceed to Test Step 2.

I won't post the rest because 99% of the time the sender has failed.

Conditions Which Generate This Code:

This diagnostic code is recorded when the machine ECM does not receive expected information from the dash panel cluster for a period of more than five seconds.

0168 04 is not listed for the 924 i am looking at.

MID 081 - CID 0247 - FMI 09

Conditions Which Generate This Code:

This diagnostic code is recorded when the machine ECM stops receiving information on the CAN data link.

Test Step 1. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTIONS.


CID 0174 FMI 02

Conditions Which Generate This Code:

Note: If both of the following diagnostic codes are active, then the fuel injection pump has suffered a complete failure of the electrical supply:


0174-02

0342-02

Both of the diagnostic codes will be active if there has been a communication fault between the Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the CAN A data link for the fuel injection pump. When only one of the diagnostic codes is active there is not a fault with the electrical supply for the fuel injection pump.


If the ECM has detected diagnostic code 0174-02 only, then one of the following conditions has been detected:


The fuel temperature signal is erratic.

The fuel temperature signal is intermittent.

System Response:

The ECM will log the diagnostic code. The diagnostic code may be viewed on the electronic service tool. The ECM logs the diagnostic code only if the engine is running.


The engine may shut down.

The engine will have low power.

Further troubleshooting is required.

Test Step 1. Perform the following diagnostic procedure: Fuel Injection Pump Circuit - Test


The CID 1684 codes are all fuel injection pump codes. If most of these become active the engine will shut down or derate.

The first thing is to inspect the harnesses and connectors.

wow thats some good info, thanks alot. Not to worried about the fuel gaue, every 924g ive worked on the fuel gauge dosent work, but the codes i posted for the first piece, this piece is very hard to start at any given time and we know tis fuel because were not getting any smoke, have to crack injectors or give her a shot of wd40 into the air box:rolleyes: But after it starts it runs alright for being what it is. I would realy like to know how to do that fuel circuit test if you could psot that up, one of those cat scanner tools would realy come in handy i guess, but these are our only two pieces that have computer capable diagnostics all our dozer grader and so on are all pre 90's and run like champs. Once again thanks and ill put some pics up of our up armored equipment.
