Any gears pressed on? They damaged in any way or sometime else get damaged from shock load. Someone who knows those machine better might have a better idea.
The end play on those shafts needs to be measured and it needs to have correct shimming. You can't just take the old shims out and put them in with a new shaft. You got to think of the machining and manufacturing tolerance differences over the last 55 years between then and now and the wear on all the other components.
