Hi y'all--

In 10 days I'll be the new General Manager of a dump truck company with 10 trucks + 6 owner/operators! This is the first time the owner has had a "professional" manager; she's done it herself since opening the doors 9 years ago.

I have a background in over-the-road transportation, plus management of a fleet of semi-trailers and medium or light duty trucks (only 3 tractors). And I have a degree in Logistics.

In the big corporation I'm leaving I've been responsible for movement of tens-of-millions of dollars in freight traveling about 3.5 million total miles per year throughout the US and Canada in a 24/7, time-sensitive operation, but I feel like I've just been a cog (maybe an important one!) in a huge, impersonal machine. Now I'll be responsible for the livelihood of about 12 people and a whole bunch of one person's money, working in an environment where $1000 is "real money"!! This is totally new....

I'm really looking forward to this change, and am proud that this successful businesswoman thinks I bring enough to the table that she wants me to run her "baby" for her, plus teach me everything I need to know about dump trucking. I'm also nervous as hell!!

I'm very glad this forum is here, and covers such a complete range of stuff that I'm sure to need advice on!

So thanks for being here, and I'll be talking to you again soon!

It's great to have yet another person interested in trucks and the business of hauling on the forum. You may be teaching us stuff after you've been in your new job awhile.

Don't be afraid to supply pictures,if your boss doesn't mind:thumbsup

Well, that didn't last long!!

I got laid off a month ago, as the dump truck recession that was happening in FL when I took this job has deepened into a depression and ths company couldn't afford me. The owner gave me a month's severance, and that runs out tomorrow. Good thing I start my new job Monday!

I'll be the Custom Options Planner for Fire Trucks at Pierce Mfg. I'll be the go-between for dealers and the manufacturing engineers. Sounds like a 40-hour, low-stress job, and the pay is better than my last two 55+ hr, high stress jobs! Yeah, I've been in the wrong line of work for quite a while....

This is a 6-month contract job thru an agency. Management tells me they absolutely need this position permanently, but corporate hasn't given them approval yet, so I have the next 6 months to become indispensible.....

BTW, in my previous job, before the dump truck thing, I was Transportation Manager for Ringling Bros Circus and Disney on Ice ( www.feldentertainment.com )

I can't wait to start playing with fire trucks!!!

:thumbsup
