ATF fluid for hydrolics?

I have a bunch of ATF from work. Is it a problem to use it as hydraulic fluid in my 98 new Holland 555E? I'm gonna be changing a bunch of cylinder seals soon and I have no other use for it. Thanks

If you knew that the seals were all compatible it should work. An automatic transmission is a hydraulic pump after all. That said, I would buy at least the correct off brand hydraulic fluid. Tractor Supply's "Universal Hydraulic Fluid" is way less expensive that ATF anyway.

I have found ATF to be very good at many things:
Quench knife blades and other steels while hot from the forge.
Hydraulic steering fluid for boat helms.
Mix 50/50 with alcohol to break up ice and condition air brake lines in winter.
General lubricant (I use it in a can oiler this way)

ATF type A is equivalent to SAE 10. A Ford Versatile 276 tractor I owned with a hydrostatic transmission ran it as recommended by the manufacturer. That machine had done several thousand hours and the pumps and hydraulic motor had never been touched.

I would just use the right stuff.

It may work okay in a closed system as it does for it's intended purpose?

It is high in detergents. I ran some in my diesel generator engine for 20 minutes one time to clean it out some. I immediately drained it and replaced with 15w40. Oil pressure held okay in that short run but would have probably gone away at full temp.

I will never use it as an open lubricant again. I mixed some with waste motor oil once to use as a bar and chain lubricant. Put it in a big ol bow saw to cut up a water oak. Next time I pulled the saw out the bow and chain were solid rust.

It used to be called for in Poclain excavators because they were high pressure in those days. Pumps were positive displacement piston pumps running in open center hydraulic systems and would run hot. No other hydraulic oil in those days could take the heat or pressure without breaking down. Stuff was expensive back then as well. What you have now will likely run just fine in any standard hydraulic system. Problem is that if you have a warranty pending, it will be a great excuse for the dealer/manufacturer to deny coverage.
