    first thing i would try, find out what the factoy cycle times are.those old pay loaders were slow when they were new compared to todays machines. 2nd) disconnect your linkage at the spool valves to see what kind of resistance is in it.linkage maybe gummed and rusted up if units been sitting...

    dont know what its worth but some parts on the older ones hard to come by. did the differential in one few years back had to go with a used gear set. but when running good they push like hell. you said black smoke, did it have balls??? some one might have turned up the ananoid valve =more...

    try out a deere. they are well balanced smooth and the hitachi pumps are hard to beat.

    limp mode they are here and not going away. most machines ,excavators have a limp mode switch (hidden) in case of a catatropic failure .
