Better chain that down better

Today, a portable ready mix operation was moving out a plant and lost a load on the road adjacent to our project. Redi-Mix concrete was the owner. They had this big gen set on a trailer behind a dump truck. As you can see, the chains seem to have broken and it slid off, onto the side of the road. It was a Kohler gen set, and looks like it was a Cummins V8 engine possibly. It was on it's side, but they had to roll it out of the enclosure and it turned upside down. I bet the profit from that paving job just disappeared.

If I was a betting man, I'd lay $$ that there wasn't a single chain on that gen set. The enclosure is actually totally separate from the genset.

The only way to tie them down, is put the gen set down first, tie it down, then block the enclosure up and put it on top, above the chains. Usually it puts them over height, so I usually send the enclosure on another trailer, or if they are shipping a long distance, some of the buyers just leave the enclosure for scrap and buy a new one for where its going.

So I'm betting they set the gen set down on the trailer- didn't want to be too tall, and said screw it and just put the enclosure on top and threw a ratchet strap over it.

That'll ruin your day.... Hopefully no one was injured in this fiasco. I am currently designing a moving weight for one of our loader cranes. These pictures alone justify the extra safety features I want to incorporate.

You may be correct about no chains. I saw the trailer and did not notice any chains on it or anywhere around it. I don't think it was being moved very far, and they only got about two tenths of a mile before it fell off.

Two police cars were used, one at each end, to block the section of the street where they lost the load, for about 3 hours. I wonder if they did issue a ticket??
