My friend Dave McIntosh drove this 1982, 848 Kenworth near Kwatna Bay in 1986.

Dave found a soft spot on the road.

You may be 100% correct. Dave gave me these pictures about 4 years ago and I an just going by what he told me and you know where and whose trucks they are. Heck I do not even know where these locations are. I have to work this week but I will see if I can get hold of Dave on the weekend.

Hank R Bill Neil was pushed out of BCFP Renfrew Div in 1985 , as BCFP started to switch from all off highway trucks to some off highway trucks and some highway trucks . in 1984 Renfrew Div. was running 13 company off highway trucks ,supplemented by 4 contract off highway trucks , In 1986 Renfrew Div. had 7 off highway company trucks , 5 highway company trucks supplemented by at least 9 sometimes 12 contract highway trucks . Ron Peters who had 1 of the contract off highway trucks , traded his P16 Pacific in on 2 P510 Pacific highway trucks. Bill Neil who was nearing if not passed the age of retirement took his 2 trucks to the mid coast area possibly not far from Bellacoola.

The place I grew up and used to work at bought 2or3 old KW's atleast I think they were that looked just like a lot of these. I was about twelve when they had them. They came from the sugar Kane fields in Hawaii. If I had to guess the were 850's the tires were 4-5 feet tall iirc. I wish I had pictures of them. I remember they were orange, one got sold to a company that moved very large trees.

Hank R that third picture was Bill Neil's Kenworth new at Sooke hauling for Butler Brothers . Not sure if its an 849 or 850.

Hi I always say correct me if I am wrong I am not always correct. The red kenworth leaning over is a 849S has big windshields all 848s had small windshields and the bumper on all 849s were a box bumper. The front axle is a 18,000 shuler with budd wheels. The yellow Bill Neil truck #16 is a 849RF which was the pre 850 1966 67 era you know by the tube not box bumper I remember this truck at kenworth when I worked there we converted the rear suspension from under slung springs to over like the HDX's Bill was there I was talking to him and he said this KW susp was the SH**** he had enough too tippy breaking u bolts Herman Bittman was the mech working with him he liked Herman no bull type of guy tell the truth when kenworth had problems customers liked him. The yellow truck after Bills with no markings on it I think is a 849RF but it could be a early 850 with the sloped hood because of the front axle which is a FU900 not a shuler like the 849's. Just a note all 848 and 849S had fenders that dropped down on the back end by the cab and air cleaners and 850S were straight thru like the Hayes but kenworth would do custom things like all the dealers anything to get the orders. The picture of the fellow on the front bumper I am pretty sure is a 849S has the steel roof and u can see the flex frame by the battery box start to get thicker under the cab plus a box bumper and budd wheels on front leads me to 849S. Hey if u have company names or serial numbers I might have the line tickets for these units let me know. Hope this helps correct me if I am wrong.

I think I might have a picture somewhere of some orange sugar kane kenworths I will have a look.

I'd be curious if that was them. I know a picture exist of me standing by it for a size comparison when the guy bought it. But I don't think we had a copy anymore.

Posts 671 and 672 remind me of when Kenworth could make real trucks and did. I'm not sure if the new stamped aluminum cab wonders they are making now are from the same DNA. Such is progress I guess.

In 1975 when I was working in Sparwood for Fred Sowchuck he got this new KW 850 this was his first KW. Pictures are beside the shop at the tire bay out side of course.

Hi Hank Do u have the serial number of this truck by chance. I think it might be a 849 with a flex frame FU900 front axle and 91,000 clarks most all of the 850's had mirror posts and 849's had extended mirror brackets like that. Looks like a channel frame not a I beam I will have a look to see if I have this chassis record but it might be too new for my old records they went to micofilm in 1973 will have a look just for fun. I do not have the serial # of the truck, at the time I did not even take a picture of the inside. Just one more truck, and I never drove this truck. But it did have a channel frame.
