There was a mention of the old 1965 WHD Hayes pulling windmill parts up to a windmill farm in California.(Post 1365) This was ex M&B unit H194 from Franklin River originally then sold to Rayner and Bracht and converted to a lowbed tractor. After many years in their service she was sent to Ritchie Bros in Vancouver and sold to an American Equipment Dealer Then she was sold to the outfit that used her to haul the windmill parts. However after the job ended she once again went to Ritchie Bros only this time it was in Denver Colorado. She was becoming somewhat of an orphan. The good news is that one of our club guys up in the interior bought her!!!! She is back in Canada and has a VERY good home to last out her days. Another happy ending!!!!

Good to hear that the truck was saved, and has a very good home. Would be awful to find out it had been scrapped.

She came new with her all "Apache Yellow" paint scheme with black shutters and Forest Green top of the hood. Then in the late 70's she along with some of her sister units were painted M&B Red and White with top of hood Forest green. I will dig up a couple pics of her in the different color schemes. When they were new these trucks came with the "Stub Bumper" and then after a period of time they had the Push style bumper installed on them. They were not the most friendly truck to push the lowbed with!!!!

Great that she is back in BC and hopefully someone restores her. Also, great that a Canadian made truck is back in her home province.

The guys down south of the border had a number of Hayes's and they really spoke highly of them !!! There are still some survivors down there -some still working and some just resting. I have a picture of one of the first series HD (1952) that ended up in Idaho. She is painted all white.

Marine Engineer,
That's some serious chaining up for the ride down, I sure hope he didn't have to remove them all and put back on again

Really nice pictures. She has a self loading trailer. The winch is tucked in right behind the water tank with the block mounted up at the top rear of the tank. Nice very Nice

BLK PRINCE You know im not sure. Maybe it was a different version and it somehow went over the bunk and under the trailer gooseneck to flip the reach up so it would knuckle it up. I remember seeing this style on a couple of the old "Chunk Trucks" Im thinking you are right though and it was just out of the block.

The trucks system of self loading its own trailer is very similar to the BCFP system for self loading there off highway trailers . I was working for a Gypo on their booming grounds summer of 1965 , they had an late 1950's or early 1960's Intrenational highway truck rigged up as a logging truck that loaded it trailer in a similar manner. We use to just slack the line down to the deck of the truck when loaded , but can't see the line in those pictures ,so I guess they unhooked it every load .

At Nitinat we had one HDX with a winch load and two P-16s same way.We did not have a knuckle in the reach. We had a ramp that kicked up and sat on the 5th wheel, then dragged hook and line onto front bunk and hooked it to a line with two eyes that ran down and around front axle.If winch failed we could also load trailer on top of water tank as there was a saddle and two support arms to rest front bunk on.check post 1354 and you can see saddle and supports.

HDX, Camptramp, anyone that can get HEF to accept a decent size post without it going into the HEF black hole. This forum is the first thing I check on the internet almost every day. I'm frustrated by the PM and posting business. I'm tired of writing out a longer post and then have it get shredded by the HEF monster. I'm relatively illiterate when it comes to computers and am very frustrated. Do you guys cut and paste or just play the lottery? If its the lottery I just can't win. Pretty soon I am going to find a 2 year to teach me the kids text shorthand so I won't lose such a big investment in time with no benefit in it for everyone that reads this forum or myself. Thanx in advance to anyone that plays the HEF lottery and has the secret to improving my odds. Maybe I'll be able to get to senior member status one day. (For the sake of curiosity does anyone know how many posts it takes to hit that milestone?).

Thank you, DBDLS

Regarding that HDX above pulling the train of belly dumps, I would imagine they had to break them loose before they dumped, unless they straddled a hopper or conveyor of some sort. I doubt seriously that they could dump all three trailers on the ground under the truck's power/traction.

Vigilant Those are WHD Hayes's built for DRAVO CORP in the Spokane Wash area. Im not sure where they were being used but they were for sure built for them I can dig up some spec's on the trucks if you want. Its the front fenders that give them away as WHD's.
