Cat 289D Injector or ECM Problem

Hi all,
I have an odd issue with my 2016 289D (TAW05448, ~3700 hours). It has been working fine, but then it wouldn't restart about an hour after its last use. I wasn't present when this happened, but there didn't appear to be any unusual signs. We were able to get it refired, but it idled roughly and wouldn't throttle up fully. However, we were able to get it trailered and back home. Testing showed that injectors 1 and 4 were very low or dead, but there were no codes and nothing showed on ET. I tested compression and it was perfect in all four cylinders. I replaced all four injectors and here's where the fun began:

After a few seconds for the fuel to get through the pipes, it cranked better than it ever has. It ran great for about 30-45 seconds and then it sounded almost like the computer derated the engine. It then started throwing low/no voltage red error codes for injectors 1 & 4. Now, it's back to being hard to start and running rough same as before. And now injectors 1 & 4 are dead again, but this time with the constant error codes. When researching the schematics, I discovered that although 1 & 4 each have their own two pins in parallel for positive from the ECM, they share the same two pins in parallel as the return path. Similarly injectors 2 & 3 share a return path. I have thoroughly tested the harness, and everything seems to be fine there. Pins on the ECM look fine from the outside.

Does this sound like an internal ECM issue?
If so, is there any hope of repairing the ECM?
Are there any other things that could cause this besides the ECM or are there any other troubleshooting steps that would be helpful to rule it out?
What are the odds that all the injectors (old and new) are actually fine or is it possible that an ECM issue, if that is the problem, fried them?

Having likely just wasted money on injectors, I hate to potentially waste more money trying a new ECM and reprogramming if that's not really the issue or if it's repairable. Thanks for any help!

My experience would indicate ECM failure. if I understand correctly there are 2 injector drivers, each powering 2 injectors.
Simplest solution would be to install a test ecm. We have one that won't throttle still super handy to test with.

Hey, thanks for the info. I'm confused about one part. When you say simplest solution is to install a test ECM, are you saying I should try to round up an old used one from somewhere to swap out before buying a new replacement? Can they be installed and tested in the machine without a full reprogram? Apologies, I'm just not sure what is meant by a "test ECM" or where I would find one.

Round one up or barrow a freinds in this case one off any skid loader with a c3.3b will do

The engine ECM on that entire product line is a Kubota part, not a Cat one, despite it being available under a Cat Part Number in the parts system. I have heard tell that a Kubota engine dealer (as opposed to a machinery dealer) will probably quote the lowest price for this item.

The Kubota ECM is also well-known for having all sorts of problems, but I agree with Tyler that if you can even borrow one from a similar engine that would confirm an issue with yours. The Cat Part Number is either 436-0821 or 494-0063, the first number updates to the second. @ozarkag may be able to help you with a Kubota P/N for it.

Has anyone here ever successfully swapped a Kubota ECM between engines? I know the new C2.8's and C3.6's can't be.

Yes, as a temporary/ test you can easily swap the ECM.
On the C3.3 / V3307 I think it is only Cat (C3.3) vs Kubota (V3307). As in any ECM off a Kubota V3307 will run any V3307. The Cats will have the same ECM but different programing.

On the V3800 and C3.8 it is a bit more involved. I believe 3 or 4 options that are not compatible.
Differences are:
tier 4 final/ tier 4 interim.
HP3 or HP5 fuel system
Side or bottom ECM plugs ( different base ECM part number)

Thanks for all the insight. I was able to get another C3.3/V3307 ECM and swapped it out. The ECM showed up fine in Cat ET, but unfortunately, it had the exact same issues with #1 and #4 injectors not working. So, I'm left thinking it may be something in the wiring harness or that maybe there was actually an issue with the old ECM but that it fried those two new injectors. Is that even possible? I'm not sure what sort of electronics are inside those injectors. BTW, they still show ~0.4-0.5 ohms resistance, which is supposed to be normal.

My next steps are to:
1. Retest the wiring harness again to see if I missed something with the common return wire that the two injectors share. I felt I previously tested it pretty thoroughly, but who knows.
2. Try to swap the plug from injectors #1 and #2 and see if the bad injector stays at #1 or follows the plug to #2.
3. Take two of the old known good injectors that were previously in #2 & #3 and replace them back into #1 & #4 to see if they will all work with the new ECM

Given the new info, are there any other suggestions or theories on what could be the root cause here?

Did your “test ECM” work OK when it was reinstalled on the donor engine.? It would be unfortunate if a problem on your machine has fried two ECMs.

If you were testing the engine wiring harness previously using a multimeter looking for resistance/continuity it might pay you to try putting some load on it. A 5A test light from batt + connected to one end with the other end hooked to ground should find any imperfections that might be present.

Also consider the possibility that there could be a problem with the power wires to BOTH injectors rather than the more obvious possibility that it is a problem with the common return.
