I'm looking at adding strobes to my turn signals and tail lights, of my service truck, anyone ever done this? Should I add a separate switch to control the strobes or is it possible to reuse the switch that controls the hazards?

It will have its own control box. It's a separate system. Bulbs, wire, control box etc. They're a high voltage deal not unlike a taser! They'll bite you. You'll need a switch to run power to the control box and if you want to get fancy an additional momentary switch to change the flash pattern. Watch running them while moving, some states will ticket you for that, especially in a clear or red lens. I ran them in the headlights and reverse lights on my escort trucks. Easy to do with modern lights as they aren't a sealed beam like older stuff. Hope that sheds some light on the situation. Couldn't resist the pun!

They're called Hideaways and require that you drill a one inch hole in the signal lamp. Many vehicles today are designed with a flat spot in the signal to accommodate them. Look at LED hideaways too, I find they are brighter than the strobes.

I was at the county public works today picking up some chemicals and noticed the lights on the dump bed of one of the new trucks looked weird. The body has a 6" red oval on each side of the tailgate and the center of it was clear. I'm assuming the clear part is a strobe, but there was no one around to ask besides the cute girl from the noxious weed dept. Would be a slick way to put strobes on the bed if you already have ovals.

I've never wired LED strobes to a real controller, but the semi's only have 2 lights and the trailers are fed off the clearance light circuit with a marine grade switch. I couldn't be bothered to run a switched circuit through sets of doubles. I want add a set of the 6 LED strobes to the front bumper and a the 1" strobes to the back bumper of the service truck to compliment the minibar it has and maybe hook it all to a real controller, but that's a someday project. This is what I used on the Semis.

Mounted these on the mirror brackets.

Strobes are nice when the cabling and plugs are all protected, but the moderately high voltage 450v or so tends to want to leak out when a cable gets nicked or clipped. There was a supplier, strobesnmore or something close to that. Whelen is a good supplier of stuff and now there's the new high output led 'strobe' that it seems all the new state police and such are running, I'm looking into them myself as they're low voltage and still seem to work really well. The LED strobe bulb isn't a regular LED bulb, its a little domed thing and cranks out a ton of light.

We run LED Ziggy lights on our stuff now, have some older stuff with the H.V. strobes. Upfitting is much easier with the LED lights as it is a power, ground, and a program wire that can be run to a switch or momentarily touched to power to change flash pattern. They are also nice and bright, usually running 4 in the grill and 4 facing the rear of the trucks. Also have some that are under a half inch thick, surface mount that work rear well. Thanks for the info, I'm in the early exploration stages to see if this is something I want to try and under take in my spare time

I work for our county's highway department. We looked at some new 6" oval grommet lights from Grote that were similar to the ones you described. They're red stop/tail/turn lamps, but the clear lamp in the center isn't a strobe. It's an integrated reverse lamp. At least the ones I have seen were set up that way.

Just a bit. I think the 1" strobes were ~$25 and the mirror lights were $50-60 plus the chrome bezels and stainless brackets.

I didn't see any other strobes on the back, but your probably right. If they are b/u lights I don't think they're gonna do much being 6' up and on an angle.
