I scratch built these from us patent office drawings & pictures of these machines.I have since sold these on e-bay and the BOF building has been torn down.

I had many other scratch built models but after losing my eyesight.Model railroading seemed out of reach.

Modeling steel production had its perks and its downfalls. The perks were easy enough.The downfall of modeling steel in any scale is there are no kits for steel mill heavy equipment.So after my family and I built a shed . I started building my dream steel mill layout in HO. The massive structure you see in the first photos is the scratch built BOF building. It was downsized from how I would have liked to have built it. It measured 4' X 4' X 3 1/2' high,lite with LED lights.The scratch built carriers started off as norscot 627G scrapers.The morgan scrap box crane is completely scratch built.Just give me a picture of it and I could have built it.Hope you folks enjoy the pictures.

I went to a train show here about a month ago, Slagpot, and was impressed to see that you could buy just about everything to build an HO scale steel mill all the way to the ore dock, if you had enough money! Walthers Cornerstone series if memory serves. Sheesh.
Excepted were the specialty vehicles, as you pointed out. At least for now...
I get depressed at every one of these shows, since I collect in 1/50 or close to O scale, at 1/48.
You can buy just about any modern structure in HO, but selection is limited in O.
I wonder why none of the model manufactuers have come up with Cat dealer structure kit yet? Seems like a natural for all the 1/50 scale models out there.
I'll just have to build it myself, I guess!

I wonder if there would be a market for 1/50 scale models of mill equipment ? These I can see and work with. Also it would be very simple to build a modern Caterpillar 1/50 dealership.

When I was in Skagway last fall the museum has a model of a Container Ship being worked. I could spend hours looking at all the details. A massive amount of work goes into these things. Very nice work!

As I'm not familiar with the specialized machinery used in steel mills, your models help one get the true size and porportions of the machines.

I did follow the thread on steel mill equipment. But you still can't get a feel for the overall size of the mchine from a ground level pic.

Yeah I sold all of them on e-bay.As a matter of fact one of the guys on this forum bought the tugs and a carrier. The BOF building I tore down and threw away. Started to sell it of ebay,but to much of a pain to disassemble. I'd like to see the container ship model.

A few pics. Not the best. The model was under glass. It was done in the 60s and is showing a little age. The gantry rode the ship to offload itself at ports of call. Skagway had a slip it pulled into and offloaded both sides. Most freight was railroaded over White Pass to Whitehorse Canada. Pretty unique design.

Now that is cool !!! This must have been a sight in real use . Is it still in operation ? I see your in Alaska. Do you know if the aqua-train is still in use ? Use to be a huge railroad car hauling barge.Dunno if its in use or not.Thats for posting the pictures,very neat.

I think the Frank Brown quit operating in the late 70s. They use Barges now. The last time I was in Whittier the Aqua Train came in. That was around four years ago. I'm not sure where it came in from or how it fits with Alaska Marine Lines Rail Barges. Someone told me they haul from Prince Rupert. Not exactly sure. The Rail Barges that AML use are amazing. I think they are 425' X 125'. Drop the ramp and pull the train off.
