Im sure my boss has a black and white photo of this 009 on his wall. Not sure how many 009s where at NZFP Kinleith. Ill ask our mechanic as he would have been doing his time then. Kinleith was traditionally logged with pole haulers. The bosses there loved them. Not quite sure how it became that way as the Skagit SJ4 was common there to begin with. Im not old enough to be able to tell that story.

It is ironic that today you will still find 009s logging similar country.

Getting out'a there

First a shot from a couple of months ago.
Second, Elvis is leaving the forest.
Third, a shot from the top of the Pukemako hill look southeast towards the Ruapahu.

Great shots of the country. I still remember skiing on Mt Ruapahu many times, the sulfur flats of Rotarua (sp), and all the great people i met along the way.

thanks for the memories.

If you want to model a 009 on the tank carrier, you can use Tamiya components. But, the hull needs to be lengthened, and widened. Look in the back of a 009 manual for the parts book on the "Napco Spar Carrier", they sold the identical carrier to Tyee as well. Later they were called "Traxxon".

I am actually going to scratch build one in 1/25 scale. The Tamiya kit (as well as every other M4A3E8) is in 1/35 scale, which is the common military scale.
Thanks for all the help & tips.

Yea there is 2 New Zealand made 124's working here in NZ and I think the third and fourth ones are ordered too. I'm working with the newer one and it's pretty mint. I haven't had a decent fang on it yet but I will once we get a decent grapple.

Log Frog & KillerBeeGuts,

Is there still the same logging activity around Rotaurua on the North Island as there was in 1982? Does NZFP still operate on the same large area (i seem to remember an area of 270 square miles, but could be wrong). What of kiangora logging co. (KLC) still running all the Pacific P-9, P-10, P-12, P-500's??

Kind Regards

I thought they made one in 1/25 as well.... maybe it was 1/16?

Tamiya did 1/48, 1/35 & 1/16 on the Sherman variations. They did make a few 1/25 scale tanks, several German tiger variants, the British Centurain. Others were done in 1/25 by Bandai, some were the same tools used by other companies. But sadly no kit of a Sherman in 1/25, recently VS RC has come out with a 1/25 scale early M4, but it has the wrong early & narrow suspension. Franklin Mint offered a hand assembled 1/25 scale M4A3E8 in diecast. this is a beautiful piece & i have mine all taken apart for a certain logging model project......

It was 1/16th scale unfortunately. The only M4A3E8 Sherman in 1/25th scale with "easy eight" suspension is a Franklin Mint metal one. Its really nice but pricey.

Cheers:

Just think, if you wanted to do the tank mount 046 you would need two Franklin Mint models, lol! It is actually really weird, the way the spar carriers were built. They kept the big cast armour nose piece, but they seem to have built a new wider hull around it. Longer too, the spacing between the bogies is closer to the M4A4 with the longer hull. I do have measurements and detail pics from our museum 009 if you need any help. :)

MM OK, you have my attention!!!! all the photos you can share would be fantastic, as the 009 is in my future for model projects! Especially the Madill angle drive for carrier track power to the ground! Send me a PM or email at; ap40rocktruck@gmail.com

Trakloader - there are many diagrams of an 009 on tracks in that manual that you have. Here's one of them that I found today.

Neither New Zealand Forest Products nor the Kiangara Logging Company are still around. Kiangaroa Timberland is managing the Kiangaroa Forest and Hancocks manages the Kinleith Forest.

Things have changed quite a bit down here since the Forest Service days with a significant amount of overseas investment. Our Ministry for Primary Industries releases a publiation anually on the state of the forestry industry. The 2011 publication is here http://www.mpi.govt.nz/news-resourc... Forest Description (NEFD) as at 1 April 2011
