Your right tiny, these are all things that could get someone hurt badly or killed. But the biggest problem here is just common sense, which ain't that common. The guys under the crane boom need a serious talking to. This is a pretty dumb move on 7 parts or however many of them there are. Amazing out of all those individuals that no one can see this, or maybe the boss put all the suicidals on one crew. They could put anything under that boom to block it up, loader bucket or just something. Perhaps the stand that's made for it.
On the other hand, dangerous conditions exist everywhere and that's just that. It does mean that somebody just said well that's good enough necessarily, some conditions just exist. I get very frustrated with the constant enforcing and litigation of safety procedures and proper handling techniques and safe guards. I know atco can hear me, because of his line of work, that there is a point and time when you just gotta stop ****ing around do a job. Try to avoid fatal danger, grab your nuts and sack up and pull on the cheater pipe or light the starting fluid to get that tire on the rim so work can get done.
I believe our economy sucks because we stand around and think about ways to make things more complicated by thinking about an easier or safer way rather than just taking care of the task in front of us by using our muscles and brains in unison. I own a rock quarry that is governed by MSHA and I had a recent inspecton. Seriously, sometimes it is like a direct accusal that all personnel on the mine site are simply toddlers and cannot think for themselves. I had a fantastic inspection with zero citations, Which sucks because I will probably get a special inspection now from the district investigation team because they believe under no circumstances can a mine site have no citeable conditions. All my stuff is in line, but while observing some conveyor belt splicing a board with a nail flipped over pointy side up. It was quickly corrected and all of the sudden we are preached at about the dangers of boards with nails in them. Perhaps my recent inspection has put on edge. But none the less, this is the direction we are headed so we must adhere to the rules or business is no longer affordable.
