We have a leaking front crankshaft seal in a 4045HFG92 running in a generator set. Can anyone offer any insight on replacing it? Any special procedures or installation instructions or tooling needed, and maybe if someone has a torque spec for the center pulley bolt?? Looks fairly straight foreword, pry out seal and tap in new but i know looks can be deceiving and prefer to line up ducks ahead of time.

Engine serial number please?

If it is the bolt with a 30mm head, it is torqued to 370 ftlb (500 Nm).

There are two different seal configurations for that engine, so the removal tool could be one two different ones. Do you have a seal with a separate speedi-sleeve, or a seal with the speedi-sleeve as one integral unit (Deere calls it the Unitized seal)?

As for the installation tool, they all use the same tool. You might get away without tools for the seal removal (although the tool will make it much easier), however the installation tool is a must. All the new seals are the type with a built-in speedi-sleeve and without the installation tool, the seal will be ruined if installed without it.

Google JDG992 for the old seal with separate speedi-sleeve. This tool is just for speedi-sleeve removal, not the seal, which you would remove using some sort of generic seal puller.

If it is the unitized seal, Google JDG1923 for the removal tool.

For installation, Google JDG954.

I read through the information, from the engine serial number will you be able to tell if it has the 2 piece or unitized installed from the factory? As the cost for the 2-piece seal removal tool is so high it would likely be less expensive sending it to JD, but if it originally came with unitized seal its cost effective for us to tool up for removal and installation.

So i was able to spend a bit of time on this. Ive attached some photos. It appears based on the witness marks around it someone has been in here before(this was purchased from a rental house). The number on the seal installed is DZ111671 which comes up as the parts number in the parts breakdown, however it doesnt look the same from what replacement seal photos look like. It almost looks like it was the two piece seal and someone didnt pull out the speedi sleeve?? Ive ordered the replacement seal and installation kit and puller and we shall see!

Don't concern yourself with any pictures associated with the part numbers. That seal has undergone many updates and color changes. DZ111671 is the latest seal and comes with an integral sleeve in which the "assembly" gets installed together, not separately.
