Hitachi EX60URG starting problem

New on this site and hope I'm not repeating or in the wrong place. I initially posted this question as sort of an ad on to someone else's post but got no response. Maybe because that's not the way to do it. So here goes.
Bought this excavator(Hitachi EX60URG) recently at auction. Needed new batteries so I made a diagram of how the two 12V ones were installed- in series I think-giving 24V. Problem is I lost the diagram. Installed from memory figuring the positive terminal connected to the red wire on the machine. No luck starting so I checked more carefully and found both wires on the machine were red. And the one I connected to the positive battery terminal was actually going to machine ground and presumably should have been to the negative battery terminal. Reversed them and now ignition switch seems to be ok as far as applying power to gauges, etc. All the red lights come on for a few seconds like in a car-to check the lights I believe. But when switched to the start position-nothing. No starter motor action. I'm sure there is a fuse or breaker someplace but I haven't been able to find any fuse box. If I had a book or diagram I'd try to work through this but at this point I need some help from you "experts". Any thoughts, ideas, recommendations greatly appreciated? Thanks in advance guys.
One more thing-What does the URG stand for? The John Deere site has manuals for a Hitachi EX60-would those be close enough to mine? Mine does have one difference from most excavators I've seen. It has what I call an articulating arm. The bucket can be moved sideways parallel to the machine, 10 or 15 feet, by an extra joint on the arm.

The EX60URG is most likely a grey market machine, chances are you won't find any manuals on the machine, and if you were lucky enough to they would likely be printed in Japanese. Connecting the battery terminals backwards would have little effect on starter motor or fuses because the electrical system would not be suffering from a short circuit, rather just reversed polarity. However, reversed polarity can have detrimental, even destructive, affects on electronic components, such as rectifier in alternator and ECU's. About the only thing you can do is turn on ignition and see if current is being sent to start solenoid on starter to operate starter motor. If you can get the starter motor to run and crank engine, and possibly engine starts, only then will you be able to tell if reversed battery connections have had an effect on components.

Thanks for the info Willie

Thanks Willie, I'll check out the starting circuit. Assuming its like that on other engines it should be straightforward. And I'm crossing my fingers, hoping I didn't mess up the electronics. Although I spent my adult life(retired now) in electronics and computers, once its inside one of those black boxes and there is no wiring diagram,I'm lost.
Given that she's a grey market machine finding parts probably will be difficult. I have found the John Deere site with Hitachi manuals. One is for the EX60. Any idea if that's the same-or close to- my EX60URG?
Incidentally none of the printing on the machine is in Japanese. Fuel, Temp, Battery gauges, all in English-and it says "Landry" right on the side where the "EX60URG" decal is. So, although it is a Grey market machine it must be from an English speaking art of the world.
Any idea if the Operator Manual would include info on wiring? How about servicing? Or do you suggest I get the, much more expensive Service Manual?
Thanks again for your help....

Hi Jackson, i have a ex60 -1 manual and i think i may cover the urg, although im not 100% sure, if so il try and send you a copy! That being said the ex60urg is a very straight forward machine, Isuzu engine and no ecu's not, if your good with auto electrics you should be able to figure it out (even i can on those little machines:eek:)

I have the same unit ex60-urg, urg stands for the offset boom. You can get a service manual from Wajex in Kamloops B.C. Canada, 250-374-5055. It costs a bit but worth the cash and they may fax you the wiring part asap. NOTE: the service manual will have a different engine than the isuzu thats in it. Hope that helps a bit. Love this machine. Treat it good.

Thanks Alden, It seems, according to the post from Wardiker, the URG stands for the offset boom, which mine has. Since my problem has nothing to do with that area the manual should be a great help. Not sure how you send a copy though..... Email? Or regular "snail mail"? I'm heading over to where I have the machine this weekend, a 125 mile trip, and am hoping to have some info by then so its not a wasted trip like the last time when I went expecting to get a couple of days work from it. If I can get just the wiring diagram it will help. Any way you could email me a copy of that? Don't know if that's doable on here. If not I'm at jcf942@yahoo.com. Or, if its just like any auto or diesel starting circuit maybe I can work without one.
Again, thanks for the help Alden. I really appreciate the offer of a copy of your manual and hope I can return a favor someday.

Thanks for the info Wardiker. Mine does indeed have the offset boom. Do you think I need a service manual or would an Operators Manual be enough? Nice to hear you love the machine. I picked mine up at a farm auction when, even though I was only slightly interested in it, it went for very little. At least it seemed very little to me. I think it was $12,500 American dollars. How does the seem to you. Oh, and it has around 4000 hours on it.

If it's got Landy on the side of it, it's most likely a gray machine. Getting parts is not difficult, at least not from my Deere dealer. The only problem they have is the gray machines don't show up on their parts computers so they have no parts diagrams to view. In that case they email model and serial number to corporate Deere and they provide dealer with build codes and parts pages required. Once you obtain the diagram for part you're looking for, ordering the part is easy.

Thats a solid deal I paid $14,000 canadian three years ago with the same amount of hours, It paid itself off in 2 years( summer months only 4-5). I bought both manuals and have made it a priority to know the machine inside and out, grease it lots, use synthetic oil, check all fluids and above all dont beat on it, gentle and smooth (when ya can). I do roads, rv pads, demolition and clean up, and a bit of logging here in cottage country. Practice turning by using the bucket to do a wheely of sorts, then move the boom and tracks to pivot. Youtube has some great instructional (if yer new to this type of equipment). And get contacts for parts and service, change your filter yearly, I made a little book with all this so I know service intervals and have all my contacts in one easy spot. Lasltly I have a great mechanic who also helps me to do stuff on my own. Good luck

Thanks for all this information Tool king. Seems like everything I might ever want to know is there. Looks like I'll be doing some serious reading for a while.

Tool_king,
Can you make the manuals you posted on 11-08-11 available again. The links don't work now. I have a machine like this and have a start problem.
Thanks, Chuck
