Nicky, has posted up a few snaps of the job I did last Tuesday, this was to repair the failed R/H engine mount on his D8, to save a load of work I swapped the engine back case with a good 1 off another engine, the new (S/Hand) mounts were fitted to the good case and the lot stuffed back onto the tractor including another flywheel, the Torque was a knacker (scrap) although it still worked well??? anyhow I built up a good unit on the Wednesday ready to stuff in this week, Thursday and Friday I rebuilt a F/Drive on a D6C 46J tractor also swapped the Equalizer Beam with a few snap's comming soon, this week I am going to whip out the Transmission from Nickys D8 to have a peep inside so the Firm is still flat out, today I stuffed an engine back into a CAT 951C that I have just rebuilt so things are busy.

Tony, can you still buy the tooling from Finnings, or get it made up? I don't expect you come across anything you aren't tooled up for now, though. Will the Cat press do Komatsu's as well?

ih100, the CAT service press tooling is still able to be bought new from Finning (CAT) if you have the big Coin collection, as for Komatsu having the tooling readily for sale I would be scared to ask, Komatsu anything in parts can be a drama in a few ways, firstly when the parts man says "Back order Japan 3 weeks etc" then when he quotes you the price its funny at first but the giggle thing stops quick enough, I have all the tooling to tackle CAT D2 through D9 including all the track shovels etc, also all the Komatsu tooling from D31 through to at least the 155 dozer, the thing I am stuck for is a young spark keen to get stuck in and learn the game.

If only you were on this side of the pond tc. I love working on the older iron. I just bought a 951 I'm going through now. I like the old 8h's and 955's and such. There is also a 6c for sale locally I'm thinking of going to pick up

Tony, I'll send my lad down to you when he's old enough...another seven or eight years. Seriously, it's work I'd love to learn myself if I wasn't already occupied. I might have a working holiday with you.

On the transmission fault for the sharp eyed sorts, the oil spray pipe has fell out of its location, so the pinion has not been getting much of a drink, the pinion is a floating location on the p/shifts with bevel gear lash set on the forward position of the pinion travel.

tctractors, guess you solved your teaching a young lad to take over the business, by getting younger with each post you share with us. I have to hand it to you for doing some great work and being so kind to share it with us. I sure enjoy seeing what you are working on, and some of the methods you use to make it all happen. Thanks for taking time to share with us, such a very interesting job you have.

Hey TC:

Any chance I could use some of your amazing pictures for the Textbook I'm working on?

I would be happy to give you credit and appreciate the help.

Thanks, Scott

Profrooky, what kind of textbook are you working on? Maybe you should start a thread about it and followers could send you pictures as needed:drinkup

Hi Mike L:
It's a textbook that will be directed towards College level Heavy Equipment Technician students in North America and will cover the key aspects of all major systems found on Heavy Equipment machines. It will explain how the systems work and how to service and repair them.

I'm hoping it will become a valuable reference for students and apprentices entering the trade and be part of their knowledge base as they work in the industry.

I've got most of the writing done and am now putting together the illustrations for all the chapters. I have a lot of my own photos and illustrations and have permission to use many others. There are also some really great photo's that are posted to some of the threads that I would like to use and so far most of the guys have agreed to let me use them when asked.

I have considered starting a separate thread but didn't know if that would be allowed.

This forum has a lot of experience and knowledge that I would love to tap into to make it an even better resource.

Could someone let me know if it would be Ok to start a new thread asking for photos for my book?

Thanks, Scott

I'm trying to make a joke about about a school book of TC's pictures here in the USA it would be a history book, with that said I truly admire Tonys work, I don't no anyone around here with his knoweldge and skill on these older cats, my hats off to him. Chances are here if you teach students with that older material they would never set a hand on one after they graduated. Hope I made someone laugh!

profrooky, you do as you like with any of my junk, as overworked has already posted about lots of my jobs being on older bangers, the new stuff I work on I hardly bother to take any photo's of as its realy not very interesting (to me) and usualy involves a wire or a relay to make things work, the cost of parts etc on new stuff is often the cause of plenty of Companys only running kit for around 3 years now then swapping things for new, so the fun for me is not great on new stuff as I dont do service style work, there is dip stick men about for this task with the nasty jobs comming my way.
