Case 580B 188d Engine Rebuild Tips? and Procedures

hi i am interested in eventually rebuilding my 188d on my case backhoe. i m wondering if the engine can be rebuilt by me and the help from a friend and can the engine remain in the tractor? and how hard is it for a good basic Rebuild???

It's always a good thing if you have had some previous experience working on engines. The service manual for that machine is available on CD, I think, on E-Bay, and is quite detailed.

Yes an in-frame overhaul is an option, although some parts won't get replaced or inspected. Here is brief look at what you are in for with a complete rebuild:

If the front crankshaft seal has to be replaced, then you might be better off pulling the engine out, as it will almost be out at that point.

I would pull the engine that way you can do the crank seals and you'll have a much more thorough job that way. Depending on your experience and your friends experience with engines how successful you will be.
