have sometimes just used a small 1 ton bottle jack to jam between track frame and lugged nut and jack it firm.
When doing preloads I always back tractor up on a block of wood so sprockets clear of the ground. check deadshaft nuts tight first. Then tighten preload nut. There is 2 OTC C spanners for doing Cat preloads. D4s need the smaller 'skinny' hooked one. got both now, but had to use jack before.
