New Member, Hi to all.
Your forum has already told me my cat 951 was built in Glasgow as its Serial No is 89A 1384, can anyone tell me a build date from the 1384. It is 24 volt electric start direct drive with what I've been told is a D330 motor.
Thanks for any help

I don't have that serial number but it looks like 951B's were built from 1968-1971 and then switched to the 951C. That serial number in an 86J series would be a 1969. I'd guess yours may be a little newer being built in Glasgow. The 86J prefix continued with the 951C until 1981.

Thanks for the reply Dave.
The Serial No 89A 1384 Model 951 is stamped on a Waugh & Josephson (Australian Distributers) plate that is riveted to the side of the machine.
Is there some where else I should be looking for caterpillar stamped numbers.

89A is an early 951 Traxcavator, built in the UK as you say.
Production of 89A started in 1964 so I would imagine 89A1384 is likely to be 1964 build or 1965 at the absolute latest. The 951 model was replaced by the 951B starting in 1967. UK production ended with the 89A, the 951B was never built there.

My little serial number book didn't list a straight 951 so I wasn't aware there was a straight 951. It doesn't look like 951B's sold in great numbers so your machine may be a bit newer. I've read the 941 wasn't much smaller but 941 and 941B's look to have sold more units than 951 and 951B's. 941/941B 80H series 6806 machines. 951/951B 86J series 5276 machines.

The 951 was built in the U.K. Glasgow Factory I think production started in late 1964 with the 89A Series fitted with the 4 1/2" Bore D330B engine fitted, the similar looking 63K series shovel came out in mid 1967 fitted with the new D330C engine with the larger bore of 4 3/4" and a totally new type of engine with the thin head, the 63K was still sold in the U.K. until 1970, the French built 951B was then sold still fitted with the same D330C engine, the early 89A was not called the 951A just 951 it's fitted with 10 bolt brake drums, the 63K has the 14 bolt drums, they were only built in Direct drive format, Glasgow was slow to kick off building Shovels as the D6 and D8 were the big coin earners and found a Que of ready sales for Motorway work, I would possibly think the build year to be late 1965 to very early 1966, the D4 C was also built in Glasgow as the 24A Series again sales were hot so good times.
