Attachment compatibility betwen skid steer brands

How compatible are the skid steer attachments between various brands? Are they cross brand compatible between Bobcat, ASV, Cat, Caterpillar & New Holland? Are there any brands that are compatible and some that are not? I will be getting a skid steer in the near future and would like something with flexibility for attachment purchase or rental...

All skid steer attachments made nowdays use a universal coupler that works on all later model machines. Some older machines, like New Holland and very old Case machines, had unique couplers, newer machines are universal.

When did this universal coupler standard begin? I'd like to take this into consideration when shopping for a used skid...

Most backhoe attachments require different attachment points and kits between different makes. The universal plate on the front of the skid steer became a standard about 1995. The only other considerations are in the pump flow to drive the attachments . some need a high flow pump to run. . Example would be a stone hammer or large brush mower. . Other units like clam buckets or power angle blades will run fine on the low output pumps. The last to be aware of is the lift capacity of the loader. some attachments may be to heavy for the loader.
