1988 f-700

I just bought a single axle F-700 with a 429 gasser & automatic trans. This truck does have airbrakes so I got lucky there for pulling. Does anyone know what trans this may be & also if the doors from a regular F-series truck of the mid 80's will work on this truck. I want to take the truck in & get the tranny serviced & checked out plus I would also like to put different gear in the rear endbecause it is geared super low but I am not sure where to even begin looking since I am fairly new to the bigger truck rears. ANy input will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not certain, but I think the doors are the same. 88 / 89 is when Ford made some changes to their bodies, but I don't know this applied to the larger F series trucks. I took the bench seat out of an 89 F-800 and it bolted right into my 85 F-150. To look at the cabs, they were identical. I would think there's several drivetrain compainies from you homestate of Indiana, but I wouldn't know who. A company I have got stumps from in the past is Truck Parts Specialists [http://www.truckpartsspecialists.com/][/url]. They're in Colorado, but have distribution centers over the states. The one I've dealt with is in Georgia. Post a pic of your gas guzzler! :)

Are you sure the rear end is not a two speed rear end? I would think on that model it would be, especially if you think it is geared too low.

I don't think the two speed rear is used with auto trans, could be wrong, at least I've not seen one. :)

I have seen used trucks listed for sale that said auto trans with 2sp rear end but I have never seen one in person.

The auto trans is more than likely an Allision. You may check around and see about a trans swap especially if yours in in good shape. What was the truck in it's prior life?

I remember seeing them in the past. I don't know if it was ever done by the factory. Back in the day a local big contractor bought some new tandem dump trucks with Allisons and were very disappointed when they would not move in soft ground. They had the dealer put two speed rears in them, I don't think the trucks were even a couple of months old. As I remember they put the two speed switch on the dash behind a little plate so the drivers wouldn't try to shift them on the road as it was hard to get a clean shift with the automatics when moving.

Well that was kinda' my thinking, seems to me a two speed would confuse the heck out of an automatic! That's why I thought they wouldn't be a factory setup. If jkiser does not have a two speed rear, seems the best fix is change ring and pinion to higher ratio, I'm not sure what effect that would have on the trans shifting though as a higher ratio would increase torque on the trans.

Sorry Atco, I, evidently, was not paying attention when reading the post, you are right, I think an automatic would be confused. Now, depending on which automatic is in it, I can remember this size of truck in the '80s would, usually, be geared very low, so I can understand why jkiser96 would want to change it.

Hey, I wish I had a buck for everytime I wasn't paying attention! The thing that amazes me is that he found a late '80s F-700, single axle, gas engine, automatic, that has air brakes! That seems like an oddity to me. :)

:drinkupThanks for your help & info guys. This truck was originally an LP truck that got converted to a single axle dump. I have found a 2 speed to exchange with & the only time it will be shifted is when needed, soft or hilly ground. I will try & post some pics this weekend of the truck if I get it back from being lettered.

Back when I was young and lots more ambitious we bought a number of single axle tractors and changed them into five yard dumps. They were mostly Fords from F700 to N850 if you remember those. The 850 had a 534 gas that would just about climb mountains hauling only five yards. When gas started pushing a dollar a gallon that was the end for gas and five yard trucks for us, at least for any kind of steady use. That truck would drink 100 gal. a day plus.

Sound like a good plan to me. ;)

The 2 speed will work fine as long as you dont "split shift" it like on a manual tranny. The only time I ever saw a 2 speed behind an automatic was in fertilizer trucks. They put it in low range when they got in the field. You should get along fine.

LoL, yeah, I've been in those kind of trucks. That's the kind of truck that you have to hold tight to the steering wheel when you pass a gas station or it will turn into the station! :D
