Clearing snow in the old Case 1845C

Well I have been a commercial trucker for just shy of 20 years, most of that time in the Northern mountains of BC Canada so I have tossed on a set or two of chains in my day....;) Loose chains will always break easier then tight ones. The chain links actually bind up and pull against each...

Clearing snow in the old Case 1845C

Sounds like your chains might be too big, or too loose? You can see on mine that they have the locks....I don't really need to use bungees if I don't want to they are so tight. I have not had an issue as of yet.....but I got 4 sets of chains that go over a full set of 24.5" dually tires. I'm...

Clearing snow in the old Case 1845C

Thanks for the diagram KSHansen.....that explains much! I can easily swap them on the rear wheels, or better yet toss the other set I have on and have all 4 tires chained up! ;) :)

Clearing snow in the old Case 1845C

I do have another set for the rear.....I use my 85 Ramcharger with a Meyer E47 Plow system to clear everything, then I am just using the Case to move and pile snow, and so far haven't needed the other set yet. I was also concerned that running the chains on the back might put more stress on...

Clearing snow in the old Case 1845C

Some pics of my Skidsteer from yesterday after clearing snow for a couple hours...... I got a couple sets of old commercial truck chains for free, and then split them and broke them down and shortened them to work on my machine. Work pretty sweet!

    Case 1845C update....

Well I was using the Case today to pull cut trees out of the bush, so after a few hours of work I decided to drain the planetaries and see what the fluid looked like. Bit better....the RH side which was black tar-ish before, flowed out good but was still black as night. The LH side which had...

    Case 1845C update....

Well the nasty black that came out of the LH side is most likely due to never being serviced.....I had a 727 tranny in an 87 D250 truck that had never seen a service dept, or had been decades since the last service. The fluid that came out of there was rusty brown and thick and chunky, and was...

    Case 1845C update....

Thank you for the information and advice. I had not thought of running some diesel/oil mix to help clean things out. I will run the 15W40 a few more days then drain that, then add a 50/50 mix of 15W40 and diesel....then run up and down the driveway a few times, if it looks clean then I will...

    Case 1845C update....

Just an update on what the LH motor, and no movement problem turned out to be. I eventually figured out that it was most likely water in the planetary that was causing my problem. If I heated the planetary with a heat gun for 5-10 min it would eventually move. I decided that I didn't need...

1989 Case 1845C Aux Hydraulic system questions.....

Thank you for the replies.....I thought it might be so with the foot pedal that worked in two directions, but wanted to make sure. I will post up how I like the new digger when I get it and start using it. Will be handy to have since I am working on building a 40x60 shop this year. ;)

1989 Case 1845C Aux Hydraulic system questions.....

Since I am fairly new to this old machine, which I love BTW.....very handy around the property. I am considering picking up a very simple, single ram, universal backhoe type bucket for digging ditches and such. I was out looking at my aux hyd system, and been doing research on-line but can't...

Case 1845c Undercarriage Bulge and Extra Auxiliary?

What year is you 1845C? Mine is an older 1989 model and that area is flat.

Finally got my 1845C to move....

Hadn't thought about the planetary fluid moving the other direction....good thing to keep in mind. I was using the Case today to clear wet snow....will try and get the planetary gear oil changed very soon. And I Hope to have my Case under cover by next winter....trying to build a big shop this...

    1845C wheel motor run backwards.

Wish I could be of help, but I find this very interesting....I may need to reseal my motors at some time and this is great info....will be watching for a solution to your problem.

Finally got my 1845C to move....

Was looking at parts diagrams of the planetary assemblies last night and there is a seal on the output shaft that the chain sprocket fastens too inside the chain case. If that seal is going bad then water could infiltrate in to the planetary assembly. My LH chain case was the one that was...

Finally got my 1845C to move....

The chain cases are full of fresh (used) oil.....and I sealed the inspection covers really well when re-installing them. Did not see any evidence of water in the case. Pretty sure it's water/moisture in the planetary since the shaft for the chain drive was not moving even a little, if it was...

Finally got my 1845C to move....

Well it has finally warmed up a bit here...up to -3*C from -30*C. Machine fired up on first crank after having the engine block heater, and a magnetic hyd fluid tank heater running for a couple hours. ;) And I finally got my machine to move, first I had to heat up the locking/parking pin on...

    Good info....thanks!

    Case 1845C update....

The pins are good....I had the LH side all froze up earlier with water, so I pulled the boots and cleaned and lubed everything, and re-adjusted the linkage and cables....so they are working fine. That was my initial thought, so I pulled the seat and checked that the pins were moving. Thank...

    Case 1845C update....

Well I just cleaned and put fresh (used) oil in the chain cases, and cleaned and "hopefully" sealed up the inspection covers. But with all that it is still possible that water has gotten into the LH chain case and froze up the chain.....I thought of that as a possibility. Guess no way to know...
