Skagit BU99 pics-1

Finally made a trip down to see this BU99 in action. Downhill logging with Boman from the ridge across the way and landing the turns down in the valley below.IMAG0198.jpgIMAG0181.jpgIMAG0182.jpgIMAG0183.jpgIMAG0187.jpg

Hard case way of doing it. Makes it hard to switch sides if you ever want to flip the tail rope. Could you use this North bending or will it load the guyrope too much?

Here's a shot I took at the auction that does in fact include tree-farmers Skagit 444 in the lineup there. A bunch of Skagits went through that day and a bunch of Washington stuff too.

Also can be seen at left- a Skagit PT-4Y Yarder with 70' lattice boom, Skagit 444, Skagit SJ-5, etc.

I have a box of detailed pics along with the auction brochure with all the serial numbers, etc someplace but havent run across it yet. I found like 20 of the pics in a random album and this is one of those pics. None were great and show any detail.

Tree farmer- my uncle (and a neighbor of yours out there- R.C. Calvert) purchased a dandy little Garrett Model 15 skidder at this sale that day also. I am sure you remember RC and maybe even remember that little skidder. Someone came along and offered him big $$$ so he sent them away with that skidder one day and bought a nice little dozer- a TD-9 I think.
This is an old post but I got some pictures of a Crown Zelebrach (or how ever you spell it)auction but this auction was in 1986 and there was a Skagit PT-4Y Yarder with 70' lattice boom, Skagit 444, Skagit SJ-5, etc.AND I CAN'T UPLOAD IMGES:dizzy:cussing:deadhorse:duh:shf:soapbox:Banghead:bash FOR SOME REASON IT JUST SAYS INVALID FILE!!!!!:bash:idontgetit I got pictures of a Skagit 444 555 and a PT-4Y.

Skagit Corporation, Skagit of Canada Ltd

Needless to say, I am very impressed by all this. Many of the fifties and sixties literature I haven't seen for decades.

For those interested I donated the complete Skagit Corp. Film and slide library to Museum of Science and industry in Seattle. Most of the work done by Ken Schell.

Also evokes memories of Jack McIntyre, Jim Carlson, Harry Sanford and others at the Company in the fifties and Sixties.

Jim as head of Skagit of Canada was involved in reinforcement of the SJ-7R in an attempt to make it suitable for the big timber in BC.

Here's a pic of those machines I took at the auction; not great quality sadly.

Abandoned Skagit SJ-4RT

Here's an interesting one for you: I first saw this machine at that same RB Auction- Rainier, Oregon in June 1986.
During my visits into Haines, Alaska I had seen a machine several times from the air over a span of years, and finally got in there for pictures in 2008.

In 2009 a contractor from Oregon arrived and did some demo work nearby, and the machine went South as scrap with them when they left.

Skagit GT-5D on Crawlers

Somewhere in Alaska on a cold winter day, a Skagit GT-5D (S/N D-20) stood still long enough for me to capture a few images...

Skagit GT-5D, Continued-

A few more pictures. I took just over 300 shots over 4 days and several visits- morning, night, etc.
The trouble with these machines is the photo opportunities are getting less available every year.
If you're into this sort of thing, treat every visit as if it's the last. It very often is.....

That's some good words Eric! But we must remember, just 8 years ago it was no digital cameras and I personally allways tended to make some few good pictures and save film...
But with nowadays posibislities for taking pictures I hope everybody interested in machinery take Eric's words to mind. And don't also forget to get the serial number!
