I was wondering what size grapple you guys might recommend for a Skagit SY717 running 5/8" lines? I'm a little worried about the weight of the larger grapples. The machine typically runs in smaller wood that is bunched or in medium sized wood that is hand felled. Was thinking of 96" Johnson, but the 2000lbs weight is my main concern. Thanks for any insight...

From what I can make out the 96" Johnson grapple comes with a toothed jaw. I have used the 76" version of this on the 120 and found that it did not like holding more than one log unless they were small. The main grapple I use is an 88" Johnson which has the more rounded jaws. This will hold any number of logs you can fit in it. So for bunched wood go for the rounded jaws.

Some operators like heavier grapples. One plus is that you get less slack on the slackpuller which you may find to be an advantage for the side by side mains on your machine. Personally I like the lighter grapples because they are easier to chuck around.

BTW the 717 I have been involved with runs 3/4 ropes.

Yup. The BU-99 is working. Doing some major long spanning. I think they said they were out 4800'. If the boss is ok with it (I'm not on the crew), and I actually figure out how to post a photo I'll show you the operation.
Anyone know the trick?

Well, sorry boys. I guess you'll have to wait until I'm more than a probationary member to see photos of Wayne Stone's BU99 in action.
You can see a short video of the beauty on YouTube. My handle there is adbombphoto1 and the video is titled Skagit BU-99 yarder 2012.
They are using a Boman MK6 car if I remember correctly and it was having a little trouble, so the turns were not what they could have been. Either way, it was a huge treat to see this monster logging, and am indebted to the hooktender for having me.
Thanks John!

Great video, I am still trying to make time to go down and see that side. Took lots of pictures of their BU98 parked a few months back, and saw the BU99 tube in the shop being cleaned up before painting. One of these days.

Found this 717 sitting on a road in between Forks and Port Angeles this morning. Looked like it had been sitting there awhilem judging by the stumps that were in the unit just down the road from where it was parked.

Sad to see it sitting, they're a pretty stout yarder, pretty good speeds too. There's work out there for it, would be interesting to find out the story

This is probably the most famous Skagit there is but it was mentioned only once in this thread,so here we go,JM Browning's Skagit BU-739 on a Skagit T-100 trailer in summer of 2009 on the Kalina site:
