Ok.. Tighten those fitting down that I mentioned and as long as there is NO oil in the steering clutch case (dry clutches and brake bands) this will fix your problem.

It is always easier and faster to get a manual then you have all teh info. :)

My D21S-5 loader has a steering problem. The left steering lever works ok but the when I pull the right lever nothing happens ,machine still goes straight. When I pull both steering levers ,the machine still moves left. The motor does not bog down when I pull the right lever. What would cause this?

Hey Vince sorry for taking so long getting back to you on your order list but am trying to dig my parts machine out of all the snow we have right now. :)

From your description it sounds like your brake bands aren't contacting the steering clutch drum to stop the track. If you tighten the nut like I mentioned earlier in this post you will at least start to bog the motor down or it will start to steer correctly for you. I will talk to you soon.

New to this Forum and Komatsu D20P-6 Owner

Hello All,

Glad I found this Forum! This is my very first post..........

I just got a 1991 Komatsu D20P-6, I purchase from a dealer out of TX (cannot really recommend him, I am not happy) that told me that this unit just come from Japan and that one of the importation to US requirements is to pressure washer the tractor before it comes in what explain that it is all clean from grease and very dry ( I say...long time without maintance)

I will change all fluids and filters and lube every place that supposed to be lubed before I start working with it. I don't think this machine saw maintance for some time as the engine oil is very dark, some light wires just hanging too.

I will need adjust the clutch pedal, it's not coming back on it's own and the brake pedal feels like is locked all the way up.....also the steering sticks will need some adjustment I think as they are very hard...I realy need put some muscle on it right now.

I have the Operation and Maintance Manual for it and for what I understood look like is engine oil for everything, even in the transmission (SAE 30) and hydraulic tank (SAE 15W-40).....Is that correct?? no hidraulic or tranny oil?

Regards,

Ed

Starting the Machine

If you have the same ignition switch as I do. Do you just click it to the first position and does this let the glow plug heat? Then do you turn the key all the way to the crank position? I was told that you don't want to burn out the glow plug. Got any information. Thanks
Hi, n00b here too!!!

FWIW, I have a D20-P6. Just bought it about 3 weeks ago...I have both the repair and the operation/service manual. I'm by no means any sort of expert but, if you have any questions you think might be covered in the manuals, I may be able to find the info and answer them.

On mine, I turn the key to annd the way to the left and holt until I see the glow in the glow indicator on left side of the dash, it take about 10~15 sec depending in the outside temp.....once it's glowing, I turn the key to the right and it starts.

Glow Plug

I am glad I asked. I have found out quite a few things already from the forum. I have only had my dozer for about two weeks or so. I had confusion understanding what model I had. On the manufacturers tag it states D21A-6 and I have a three speed transmission but what I read is that a D21 should be a 2 speed auto. The dealer told me with the Grey machines anything is possible. Thanks for the information.

Sorry the typos, I am not able to edit yet.....anyway turn all the way to the left and hold the key till you see the glow in the indicator (Heater Signal), than turn to the right and start it. It should be the same for D20 and D21's

Tracks for Komatsu D20P-6

I have a D20P-6 with a broken rubber track. I have searched everywhere and I cannot find a replacement. The track size is 500x125x45. The tracks that are on there now are "Morooka" and I have been told that this grey market machine is branded "Komatsu" but it has a Morooka undercarriage. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well after going without a starter for almost 3 weeks and coming up with nothing - I just paid almost a $1000 to Komatsu for just a damn starter for my D21A. Talk about getting it in the rear. How can this company charge a grand for a $150 starter?

Idle Up, sorry to hear that the starter was that much money.

In regards to parts for these machines, is there a reliable source online or is my best bet to talk to my local Komatsu dealer?

Additionally, my D21E-6 has a four post ROPS canopy. Almost every other machine I have seen online, in printed for sale ads, or in person have been two post canopys. I was told that a four post ROPS canopy is an indicator that the machine was an original U.S. sold machine (due to stricter safety requirements) and not an imported gray market machine. Can anyone confirm this? The dozer is a 1991 model year with a 3-speed powershift transmission, decelerator pedal, 6-way blade, and lever steering. Thanks for any help you can provide.

ROPS canopy for it are sold here for around $1,200, could one just had added it after import?

Ed,

Yes the oil application is as follows:

Engine 15W-40, or 10W-30 (Winter use can't remember temp range though)
Hydraulic Oil 15W-40
Transmission SAE 30W
Transfer Case (Powershift Transmission Only I think) SAE 30W
Final Drive Cases SAE 30W

For what it's worth I use Shell Rotella T 15W-40 and Shell Rotella T SAE 30W because it is widely available at all of the major auto parts chain stores in my area, which makes it nice for availability when on a job if I need some. I will look in my owners manual and double check the oil specs but I know the ones listed to be ok since that is what I'm using in my D21E-6. Hope this helps.

I guess that's possible, but it does not have the mounts on top of the fuel and hydraulic tanks that would accept the two post canopy and I would be very suprised if someone went through the effort of changing the tanks just to eliminate those mounts.

thanks Patrick, I was just want to make sure that was engine oil for everything....kind odd for me to use engine oil for transmission and hidraulics....
