What's this on a Cat 315?

Can anyone tell me what the square box attachments are on the sides of the track frames on this 315BL?
Are they a custom ad-on or is that something Cat did?

That's as good a guess as any. certainly not standard equipment.

Hard to tell from the photo but the welding between those brackets and the track frames looks “home brewed” to me.
