And it sparked my curiosity about the ins and outs of such a system.

the cheapest new system i have found so far is with leica and you just buy the rover and subscribe to a base network through leica its a lot cheaper than spending 30 thousand plus on a brand new base and rover or a total station but you give up just a little bit of accuracy. my personal preference is a total station instead of a base and rover but they each have there pros and cons

we have a topcon base and rover, 30k for the set up. huge time saver for us, i lay out to dig, check while digging, then pin for the foundation crew to set footings. our sites are difficult to layout, some would take 2 guys half a day to layout.

we also do all our own topo for our in house designers, land development without having to have surveyer stake anything, build accurate asbuilts, etc. i would never go back to the old way
